Volkswagen launches the new GTI version of the Golf V this week in Paris, and already a sportier version is in the making. Seen here for the first time in the open is the replacement of the former Golf R32 doing high-speed testing at Germany's Nürburgring racetrack.

The next Golf R32 will be powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine with 250 horsepower. Top speed is estimated to rate around 150 mph. Again the new R32 will be equipped with 4Motion AWD and will be offered with either with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

From the outside, the new version can be distinguished from the GTI by its two big exhaust pipes. (On the pictured prototype, VW engineers might have added the ordinary GTI exhaust pipes to the left of the real exhaust pipes to disguise the new model). The car's front and rear skirts have a different shape as well.

The R32 is scheduled for launch at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show, and another even more powerful R36 version delivering 280 hp is said to be in the works for 2007.

Even though that’s a pretty impressive car, I'm not feelin the new golf style at all :barf:. But maybe just maybe it'll look better in person. For now the mk4s look way better IMO.

It looks like one of those Suzukis. I would defenitaly go with the previous generation.

The Mk5 vw's really aren't that bad in real life. All of VW's test mules are fugly, but the ones out on the street are actually kind of nice. I think its the grille that makes the difference.

Can't wait until it's in production - just hope it's slated for the Canadian market this time around.

As for the debate on the MK5's looks, it has begun to grow on me. The test-mule pictured is also the 5-door, so that explains why it looks even funkier than usual. The 3-doors are much better proportioned.

This one picture below has been modded a wee bit (19" Phaeton Helios wheels, lowered, and Votex body kit) but it was enough to make me seriously consider it as a replacement for my car when they reach our shores.

Looks a lot like the Civic hatchbacks!
Any word on the A3? Audi hatchback I think it is?
Lots of competition because I think BMW is releasing it's 1 series soon too!

I sure hope they bring the A3 over, that car would be fantastic. Especially with the Diesel motor...a Luxury Golf if you will, super practical. Style AND economy. My mom would upgrade to that in a heartbeat.

i saw the A3 too, its hot!! i hope they bring it over! but the market for a luxury hatch aint that good here in North America. The BMW 318T or watever never made it, they are discontinuing the C-class sport coup because of poor sale or something, and the closest thing we have is the Lexus Is300 Sportcross.

I'm pretty sure the A3 is comming to our side of the pond. 2006 maybe?

I really like the 3 door version. At first I thought it was the most hideous car to come out of vw in a long time, but now I really really like it!
