Thats pretty good for a Mazda 3 man, what were you expecting?

The Mazda 3 is a great handling car. Who cares what it runs on a drag strip? There are plenty of cars that will out drag Michael Schumacher's Ferrari. It's meaningless.

Mazda 3's arent really for racing either. Thats a really good time you ran.

yeah, was that the 2.3L Manual or Auto?

My friend has a Mazda 3 with the 2.3L 160hp tiptronic jobbie, and my car pulls away hard from it. I run 15.6.

Test Drove a Mazda 3 GT. SLooooooooooooooowwww! Even though is is 160 hp it doesn't feel like much more than the 130 hp in the Protege 5.

wouldn't that be why you car pulls hard away from it? yours runs 15.6 and his runs 16.9. 1.3 secs is like 2 car lengths isn't it?

The 2.3L ain't for racing. It just have some low end grunt but as has no top end. With auto, it's dog slow but feels peppier than a stock Civic.

No offense dude, but you have no idea what you're talking about,
all the power is 3.5K and above; the car is ~same/faster then a P5, it just has a much more refined ride, hence feeling slower.

Well he didn't mention what motor he had, and so I gave a reference of the 2.3 tip. 1.3 seconds at 80-90mph is like 8-10 car lengths

Power?:dunno: I wasn't aware that the 2.3L had any. Strictly commuter fare. Refinement? You know it is a Ford Focus right? I actually found the build quality worse than my wife's Protege 5.

the spec v will pull alot harder. the 3 will never have a chance even the ralliart will get wasted by the spec v.

My sister just bought a Mazda 3 GT, it's slow, plain and simple. It handles well and serves it's purpose well, but it's slow.

Now with that said whats the real difference between a 15sec 1/4 mile and a 17sec 1/4 mile? Both pretty slow in the relative scheme of things. When a car is that slow the 2 seconds doesnt really matter. Now if it was running 20sec passes it would be a big deal but.....

I bought the gfx model for my gf and yes, it's kinda slow. Let's hope when next summer hits I can turbo it and see how well it will run then =)

I'm not saying the engine is a powerhouse by any means, and you're completely wrong in saying the car is ford focus. It's a Volvo developed platform, with a Mazda engine that Ford outsources as their own. And by the way the Mazda3 has more in common with the 2005 Eurpoean focus, then the its American counterpart.

As a Mazda3 owner, I can handily take my brother's P5 anyday, the engine has significantly more "pep" 3K and above. The car is much more refined and better built then the P5; although, the P5 is "rawer" you can hear the engine a lot more, and it pulls more consistently. It wouldn't make any sense if the next generation Protege was not as refined, or less well built, but to each their own.

Lastly, if you're thinking of the Mazda3 as a 1/4 mile car, you're on some new and improved shit. According to C&D The car pulls .87g's on the skidpad on stock rubber, dropped, with 18's, springs, and a little more airflow, it would make a killer track car, like it's older brothers the Mazdaspeed/MP3.

^^ you just changed the topic entirely. we were talkin about how the engine isnt for racing and how it is a bit more peppier than a civic. now you go and talk about autocross?

GQNammer

No he did not go off topic totally. He was just defending the the mazda 3 compared to a p5 from above posts. He just added the autocross part at the end =)

I guess it could be worse. He could start talking about whether or not the mazda 3 will be in Gran Turismo 4 or something :rofl:

I hate these points of view:
Mazda = Ford
Aston Martin = Ford
Subaru = GM
Lamborgini = VW
kia = hyundai (ok maybe that one is legit)
etc etc

Why do you feel the need to attack the car? Mine's fun to drive, great on gas, and even with only 160 HP, I still have to constantly stop myself from speeding. I've been amazed by the build quality so far.

You forgot to mention that Jaguar is 100% Ford =)

But I agree, I enjoy driving my 3 Gfx, find myself speeding all the time lol

It's a 5 spd GT... that's why I was expecting faster times... hell those celicas and integras are pulling low 16 runs on the quarter mile... you guys are totally right though. The 3 is not made for quarter mile, it's much better at autocross.
