I just bought an S13 silvia, so i'm thinking i'll look for a cheap S12 200sx for my winter beater this year! seeing as how insurance has supposedly gone down (i really should call my agent) i might be able to actually AFFORD 2 cars!!

is there a winter/summer thing you can do with 2 cars to save money on insurance??

my car's insurable value - $3000
money spent on my car - more than 3 times that
winter beater - a LOT less than money invested

SO, if my car got written off because of someone elses stupidity, i'd only get $3000 and a bunch of mods that i can't use anymore.
seems kind of unfair no? :dunno:

so if i had a winter beater that was written off, then i still have my good car that i've put a lot of money into.

not to mention winter gives you a lot of extra time so you can do things like motor swaps that will take your car off the road for quite some time. if you have a second set of wheels your other car can be sidelined for some major mods and you still get to drive instead of public transport.

My insurance company (ama) won't cover a modified car as of right now, luckily with these insurance reforms i can finally afford to go to a company who will accept my car for its differences :D

also, some worry about rust on their cars, deffinatly not fun to deal with.

Agreed. With the money spent on insuring 2 cars, maintaining 2 cars and all that, you could easily repair everything, including rust.

Cars are meant to be driven, not stored. They depreciate if you put them in the garage or not... may as well drive it.

rust repair can get REALLY expensive, especially when it gets to floor boards.
as for insurance, storage insurance so you can do some REALLY fun mods over winter and have a much more entertaining car when summer hits ;)

Nothing beats bagging the shit out of a beater in the winter, no worries about rock chips, fender benders etc. without having full coverage on a cheap car(no collision) my insurance was less than half of my summer car

badseed
10-05-2004, 12:57 AM
:werd: A winter beater can be bought for as little as 100$, and insurance is significantly cheaper(no collision).

Other Pros include:

-F*#k washing it
-F*#kvacuming it
-F*#k Worring about you dirty shoes
-F*#k being careful around curbs
-F*#k lettin it warm up
-F*#k were you park it
-F*#k door dings

So as you can see it is beneficial to own a winter beater, maybe not for everyone but then again....to each his own.

Why not have a winter beater? You dont have to worry about incuring damage on it.I camn throw my skis into it without worrying about tearing up the interior. An mentioned insurance is dirt cheap. So many advantages.

benyl
10-05-2004, 08:38 AM
You can say the same for a summer beater.

But then you'd be a "J-body owner..." CRINGE:barf: you mught get the disease that owners often get called riceritis which involves stickers, planned twin turbo setups, NAWWWSSSS and quoting FF to all your NEW friends... Seriously I tried to drive my car in winter, but you have no idea how fast a car depreciates when a bus is sliding towards it... true story, happy ending:thumbsup:

Hey finboy!
What are some of the insurance companies that would insure a modifiend (turbo) car? Do you know? Would it be a lot more to insure? When i phoned my insurance company they told me to look for a residual market insurer? :dunno:

For those same reasons I find I would rather drive the "beater" around all year. Save the convertible for our annual road trip to Vegas.. :D

The car drove fine (with snow tires), The LSD saved my ass from getting stuck but on ice it had a tendency to to drift around corners. I stopped driving it after a month cuz I realized that if sumthing happened to it I would be taking the bus. Like the one that nearly hit me. If it wasn't for all those retards on the road I would've driven it cuz as long as you drive it nicely you'll get there, it's everyone else you have to worry about.

The beater I had last year saved me $1500+ on insurance, a hell of a lot cheaper to maintain, I didn't have to really give a damn about it, and was way better on gas:)

I have an 1990 CRX Si this winter. I have a newer Acura that i park up which is fine because it keeps the kms down on it and i'm able to avoid all the dirt, rock chips and crazy drivers around involved in winter driving. Winter beaters are great! You don't have to worry about door dings in tight parking. They also don't really lose much in value since they are so cheap to begin with.

Since i hate driving in the snow(thankfully we don't get much here) Boyfriend drives me around in his 1977 Ford F250 4x4 highboy(sp?). I must say going up the mountain is quite fun in the snow. This year should be better now thats its in top running shape. New tires(ecuivalent to 33"), hubs, all engine mounts fixed, transfer case secure(fell out half way up the mountain this summer lol). Also the clutch no longer slips out. Brand new brakes and 1 ton springs. All in all its a great truck he plans to put a 14 inch lift and 44 by next year. Also could use a paint job and new cab and box. We plan to put 10g into it in the next couple years.

you guys automatically assume that if someone buys a beater to store their civic over the winter, that he wont drive that car all winter. That may be the case with some people but unlike other provinces eventhough it;s cold the roads are usually dry and salt/gravel free so you can get a lot of winter driving on your summer car. then just drive the beater when the blizzards roll through.

i have a 93 cavi for a beater
