For those that havent seen it yet and want to take a look at one.

There is a silver SMART ForTwo on display at Sunlife Plaza (4th ave SW between Centre and 1st St SW).

Noticed it in the lobby coming into work today.

sputnik

I work in the North tower (there are 3)

Ben
10-15-2004, 10:16 AM
haha I dont know which one that is...they're all north...in retrospect to the telus tower where are you?

sputnik
10-15-2004, 10:23 AM
its the one set back from 4th (closer to the river)... the one closest to the telus building is the east tower, the north tower is hiding behind it.

Those things are pretty crazy. The company I work for just bought one however, it's our edmonton office that got it so I'll have to go for a drive if I wanna go try it out.

I like the concept, however they are just too much of a chick car for me. I've seen one or two driving around downtown and I just cannot picture myself driving one of those things. And look how low the bumper is... at least it won't be hard to push the thing out when it gets high-centered on a snow drift or in ruts this winter.

I wonder if that car can survive on Deerfoot??? but hey it looks environmentally friendly at least.

I saw someone test driving one that passed by me going the opposite way by UofC just this friday...boy those things are small. I can't imagine it crashing head-on with a SUV even though they are considered safe.

...btw, hey the wheels are cheap in that base model smart.

FiveFreshFish

I would buy one. It's probably safer than an early 90's econobox.

if they're cheap i'd buy one.. Look at the dish on them rear wheels!!! I'd want a championship white, SMART car.. with 2 12" kicker solobaric subs, and HEAVY tint. No one must see me drive this garbage can on wheels..
DRIFT IT!!!!!!!!!!

fast95pony
10-16-2004, 02:29 PM
I'm sure it's as safe,if not safer than any other small car.The cage around the passengers is very strong. If the price of gas keeps rising like it is,these cars should sell very well.

I'd drive one. I wonder if the other models are going to eventually come over, depending on sales?

Are the smart cars here like the europe ones? Where you can buy different style body panels to change the appearance? Kinda like faceplate for cars.

Anyone see Fifth Gear this week ?? They had a segment on a Smart car cruise from London to Brighton in the UK . Over 800 Smart cars !! All sorts of body mods ,colours, rims .One was a SwitchBlade , no doors ,no roof , cut down windshield and rubber interior.Nuts !! Another was painted as a Friesen (??) cow , complete with ears.. They are definately a cult car in Europe.

The smart cars are all pre sold for this year. They have been selling like crazy. The city of Calgary will be buying fleets of them as well. As mentioned they are a super safe car, it's MB so of course it's going to be safe. They arent like the ones in europe though. The come in 3 trims and a cariety of different colors. In europe they have 4 seaters as well. The thing costs like $11 to fill and will go 600k on that 11 dollars worth of gas

Saw a black one going up 9th Ave yesterday. They're SMALL! Criminy.

As for if they can survive the 'foot, they've got a computer-set limit of 135 kph. So, yeah they should be ok, long as they stick in the right-hand lane. :D

QuasarCav

$11 for 600km!!!

Any math wizzes figure out how long you would have to drive that over a 90's econobox to save money?

You can but not until summer next year, oh yea not to mention it costs like $1000 to get panels and have it installed!! People in Europe just swap with their friends and install it on their own.

I need one to offset my trucks poor mileage.

As for safety ... I would take one over a firefly!

They actually crash test quite well (supposedly), they pretty much "bounce" off the thing they hit and the impact gets "transferred" around the car. And apparently they're still feel pretty solid on deerfoot. Yes you can buy interchangable color pannels to change the color.

Feedback is that the owners of these cars pretty much have to lock the car and run away or they get bombarded with random people asking them questions.

man its hard not to laugh when you actually see one in person, they look rediculous imo:dunno:

I love how everyone questions the smart's ability to survive a crash, just cuz they are small.

We'll completely over look the fact that its the engineering that makes it crash safe and not the size of the car.
I remember reading in Consumer Report that Echos have better crash rating than Neons and Cavaliers.

Hehe i like em but for a 6 foot four man like myself, it would be far too small. Anyway if you want something even funnier check out www.myersmotors.com
