I've heard of this being a problem with the 2002+ GLS models, the off thing is that there is no recall and some of the people in the states that tried to get it warrantied ended paying for it. Tell your friend to take it in and make VW pay for the repairs and his wife's jacket. Looking on vortex there's a bunch of threads the biggest one:

I wonder why they didn't do a recall... kinda sketchy.

Why would they do a recall? It's a possiblity with ANY heated seats.

could just be an isolated occurance. I did a search of the VW forums and turned up nothing.

This is VW. They make pretty nice cars but in the quality, service and support they suck. Even the faulty coil packs in the 2002+ jettas and golfs was not an official recall, it's not registered with either canadian or american agencies and when you talk to VW people they say its not a recall campaign but a "voluntary repair". Hmmm... brought mine in 3 different times to get the coil packs replaced before they decided to replace all 6 of them, which they should have done the first time.

Even the jacks that come with them are so cheap, when I used it on my old jetta the car fell off, luckily wheel was still on, but it put a huge gash in the rocker panel. Brought it in to VW and even the mechanic tried using it and said that he stopped when any weight was on it at all since the jack started to flex. They gave me one from another car and the mechanic tried it again before I left, he told me to get a scissor jack cause that one was flexing too and clearly wouldn't support the weight of the car.

Tell your friend to take it to the service manager (think his name is Ken Webster) at 5th Ave he was pretty good about the problems I had.

It's far from an isolated incident, VWAG does not take any action at all on any problems. Look at he coil packs they are running a "Voluntary Repair" campaign not a recall, whatever that means and even in the beginning alot of dealerships charged the owners to replace the coils (probably saying it was an isolated incident as well). It took them nearly 6 monthes to a year before they sent out those letters and even when they did they didn't even have the new coils and replaced them with coils from cars on the lot.

It will be like the coils and the regulators - once enough people complain it will be recalled. Just keep the receipts and photos.

Hell, I don't think VW even has a block heater/oil pan option because the last one caught fire and was recalled. No one on the local Calgary forums has reported it though.

Seems to me like someone sooner or later is gonna get a burn and want to make some money off it, and VW (or whatever company uses heated seats) will have a lawsuit on its hands...:drama:

My neigbors 5000t filled the interior with smoke so he opened the door to see wtf was happening. oxygen starved fire exploded and took his eyebrows off and 1/2 burnt his attached garage down. Car was totaled.

Hehe, I'm sure that's the same with the Audi 4000 as well. I heard buh_buh's car has seat warmers too. And when you turn it on, it makes a loud buzzing noise. Impending failure?
