Bahh, freakin online quizzes are slayin me..anyways this is an Amat 217 question, only one I can't get on the quiz, if anyone could help me it'd be greatly appreciated!


Water is leaking out of an inverted conical tank at a rate of 14100.0 cubic centimeters per min at the same time that water is being pumped into the tank at a constant rate. The tank has height 10.0 meters and the diameter at the top is 3.5 meters. If the water level is rising at a rate of 18.0 centimeters per minute when the height of the water is 4.0 meters, find the rate at which water is being pumped into the tank in cubic centimeters per minute.

That doesn't seem like calculus... more like a problem we'd do in Alg II/Trig but more... extreme.

Wait wtf is calculus...

The problem is VERY hard, but not really 'difficult' you just gotta figure out all the equations for each.. ok... it's pretty hard.

ok here is my stab at it:

d= 3.5 so r = 1.75
h = 10m

r/h = 1.75/10 so r = 1.75h/10

eqn for volume : V = (1/3)*pi* r^2 *h

sub in the r and you get: V = (3.0625 * pi *h^3)/30

differentiate that eqn:
dv/dt = (3.0625 * pi * h^2 * (dh/dt)) / 10

sub in values for dv/dt and dh/dt and you got your answer i think.

so dh/dt = 18 at h = 4 so you solve for dv/dt
dv/dt = sum of the water going into the tank and the water leaking out. (use the right signs)

i think thats how you do it. i am not 100% sure on teh formula for the cone.

Wow the geometry part of it is hard... this would be so much easier if I could find the diameter of the tank at 4m... :(

10/3.5 = 4/x
10x = 14
x = 1.4m

There you go =)

This is either a really tough geometry/trig question, or a rather easy calculus question. Wait until you get into second year calculus, with freakin differential equations, and all the other fun stuff, then your head will really start to hurt.

dj_honda, without really thinking about your solution, it seems correct, forgive me, I've been hammering on a CPSC assignment all day, so my mind just isn't in calculus.
