I have an acquaintance who has a Z4 and he told me that the sales guy at BMW gallery told him that BMW gets their horsepower ratings from the wheels and not from the engine. I called :bullshit: but just wanted to hear what this group thinks?

ALL OFFICIAL BMW HP ratings are at the flywheel/crank and are usually understated.

BMW as well as other Euro makers often understate their Hp numbers. For example early 1.8T engine in the older GTIs was rated at 150 hp at the crank but put down 140 at the wheels.

Most Asian cars, may have ~70-80% wheel horsepower output from their rated HP, ie, a stock Prelude, rated 200HP, probaby around 150HP at the wheel .. and that is kind of normal .. (beside some Turbo cars)

German cars, such as BMW, Porsche , Benz etc .. usually have near 90% HP to the wheels.. (or more for some Turbo car !)

That is why, say a 1997 BMW 328, with only 189 HP, and 3-400 lbs more heavier then a Prelude with 200HP, and way faster.

It is .. just a math game .. look at the RX-8 .. from rated at 250hp to 240 to ~230hp by Ford .. but the wheels hp is actually always the same ...
