1988 Honda Accord...my friend's car.

How would someone know if the clutch was slipping / about to die?

normally, you can push the clutch all the way in, and upon releasing it out, it will usually make the car go as you press the gas.

However, the clutch has to be released out more than halfway on this car before it starts to engage and move the car.
Im guessing this is bad...but what does it mean?

You can adjust the engaging piont of the accord cluch since it is a cable clutch, there should be a plastic nut on the clutch cable connecting to the tranny on the passenger side of the engine compartment. If you tighten it up the friction piont will be closer to the floor, if you loosen it the friction point will be higher up on the pedal.:burnout:

That's normal as the clutch wears. Just re-adjust it so that it will engage where you want it to. If the clutch was dead/slipping, the pedal would be all the way out, and when you hit the gas, the revs would go up, but you would go nowhere.

Ok, keeping this in mind, is he supposed to wait till this happens?
In other words, when should a replacement be made?

Okay, first, you should periodically adjust the clutch, to keep the point where it engages where you like it. Once you find that it is slipping once adjusted, then it's time for a clutch.
Or, if you hear a loud squeal whenever you let out the clutch, then you may have worn it down to the rivets, at which point it should be changed ASAP.
