Since we got several threads going, I'm going to make one master thread for new Husky/Mohawk locations offering 94 octane. Please keep all locations and discussions in this thread, and I will update this first post with any new locations.

Thanks Ben for the 2012 list update!

OKAY, Here's an up to date master list of all stations carrying 94 Octane in Calgary.

I have included GPS locations on most, and have divided it by Quadrant. Also, I made a list of all stations that are 24 hour, as I got caught with my pants down last night low on fuel, and every station I drove to was closed!

Keep in mind, there is NO 94 Octane in AIRDRIE, OKOTOKS, and if heading towards BANFF, DEAD MANS FLATS HUSKY has 94, at roughly 5 cents more than Calgary, and nothing between Calgary and Red Deer

Now they just need a couple the NW. like edgemont areas or beddington.

rage2
11-09-2004, 06:42 PM
They seem to be only putting 94 at the 24 hour stations (assuming the sundance one is 24 hrs). The only 24 hour Husky/Mohawk that I know of in the NW is the Dalhousie one. Last time I talked to the manager he said don't hold your breath for upgrades there... he says the station is so busy, they can't shut it down to do upgrades.

No Chevron in Alberta. And all the Mohawk/Husky's are 94 octane, not 93 octane. I was just there recently.

Don't husky/mohawk stations mix ethanol with their gas? I heard that may do harm to high performance engines/vehicles.

Higher octane, lower intake temps, cleaner burning, natural fuel line antifreeze,....

:dunno: I don't see what harm it could do...

care to enlighten me?

honestly, i noticed that i get less gas milege using husky/mowhawk premium 92 compared to Esso 91, Petro CAnda or co-op where they dont put those "environment" add ons..

Alot of people are noticing hte same thing, i use to fill up only at Mohawk or Husky, but then when I used other ones it was a lot better.

both the alberta goverment and private researchers released a report in 2002 saying the environment stuff is just to make more money for the gas companies.

what happens is they add their addictives
meaning less compound in the fuel that actually gives you the gas milege, meaning less usuable gas per letre, so they in turn make more money per letre, is this better for the environment? yes, cause less gas is burned. this makes %100 sense.

My octance reader that inputs octance levels into a learning computer or a notebook, that I purchased when I was in the Middle east, are made there and have the highest acuracy as they use actual DDS-T molecules indicated the octane level from mowhawk gas (the one off glenmore) was true 91.425, while they cliam 94

it also confirmed the shell on 17 ave sw , octance claimed to be 91 but it was actually 89.078 (closer to midgrade) I informed them and they said they would add in more octance but they probably didnt.

You can "hear" lots of stuff from all over the place, it doesn't necessarily make it true. Some people will hear a story, then pass it off as fact to the next person. On my SLK32 I ran 94 octane everyday on the street and on the track and there was no noticeable mileage drop. There was no engine failure, I literally drove the car till it fell apart and the engine still ran fine! hahah

...blah blah I have a wicked cool toy that measures octane blah blah ...

ahem ... So if I understand you correctly, you are saying that by decreasing your mileage these companies are increasing the benefit to the environment. You think this ends up burning less gas? And this makes 100% sense to you? If that's the case ... whoever sold you that toy also should have sold you a.) the manual and b.) some common sense.

As far as i know ethonal as a fuel additive is not legal in canada, and hence the reason that canada is paying US a lot of terrif money.. in this case....

do any petro canada locations have 94? or is it just husky/mohawk?

To my knowledge, no petro's carry 94 octane.

For a province that runs under the oil and gas industry, our options run low for high octane gas.

But, took a trip to B.C. last year and almost every station has 94, go figure that one out....

rage2
08-16-2005, 08:18 AM
It's because there's very little need for high octane at our elevations. It's a very small market.

IAN
08-21-2005, 10:56 AM
Actually Calgary is just as high or even higher then many parts of B.C. (1068 Metres to be exact/3500 feet above sea level)

Did ya know that 94 octane is a midgrade gas in Japan.......

Anyways, high octane is used more for performance reasons on the end of the day.

Yea, but in BC 94 octane is only readily available in the vancouver + suburbs area, near sea level. Once you're up in the mountains, only Chevron carries 94 octane (and it was pretty horrible stuff when I used it in the mountains).

Japan as well as europe, austrailia uses a different rating system (RON). We use RON+MON/2 here. So you can't just compare octane numbers. 94 RON is somewhere in the 85-90 range for our octane level.

Putting 94 octance, especialy the mokawk stuff, in your car wont do anything for performance. That is unless it is tuned specifiacaly for it with super high compresion, or mad boost. In fact on most cars you will notcie better throttle response with 91, if required by manufacturer or 89.

When you increase the ocatance or knock resistance of a fuel, especually with addatives, what happens is the flame spread slows down. This slowing down becomes a problem on high reving engines. You can acutally start having problems with burining valve seats.

You are basically pissing money away, unlesss your car needs it. I know that my B16 definatley runs better on 91 than the 94 mowhawk.

The only time I run the high stuff is BC in the summer when its over 30 degrees and I start worrying about heat soak.

How are they getting the fuel to 94? Ethonol? if so, what percentage is it? Many cars are only supposed to run up to 10% ethonol in their gas and no more.

Huskys that have 94: 3105 Calgary Trail, 19820 62ave, 15303 73a st. The last two are in the letter that rage2 posted... Calgary trail has the 94 currently if the other two aren't open.

I think that the rating on the pump is supposed to state the minimum octane level. It could very well be higher.

In terms of power output (remember I can crank up the boost).

94 Mohawk
91 Shell
92 Mohawk (runs higher boost but about same power as Shell 91)
91 Esso (used to be called 92... scammers!)
91 Petro Canada

Search my old ass threads. I tested them all, noticed Esso sucked even tho rated at 92, and they changed it to 91 after someone (not me) complained.

I just moved here from Ottawa. I would frequently cross the river (ottawa river... to go into quebec) as Petro Canada offers TRUE 94 octane, 0 ethanol out there.

There were also Sunoco stations within 5 minutes of each other all offering 94 (but an ethanol blend) across the city of Ottawa.

When getting your car tuned, if you got it tuned on petro-can 94, then switched to sunoco 94 you'd start to knock. (unless ECU could compensate by retarding).

I used sunoco's 94 out of convenience, but it was a nice treat (and a noticible one) to use Petro's 94.

Anyone know where to get 94 Octane in Red Deer?

I've called around asking:
"Could you please tell me the octane level in your premium gas?"

51st - Husky in Saskatoon (in case anyone goes there)

One note, 94 is an ethanol blended fuel and will lean out you’re A/F by about 3.5%. Ethanol contains ~35% oxygen by weight. http://www.world-petroleum.org/education/atfuels/

I strongly suggest tuning with it, especially on FI cars, before using it. If you tune it to the ‘bleeding edge’ on regular gas and then switch to 94 you risk detonation due to A/F changes. Ie if you tuned to 12.5:1 on regular fuel your air fuel on the blended 94/92 would be close to 12.9:1.

That all said I run it. :)

Well Captain Oblivious, if you would just check the Husky website station locator LIKE I F'IN TOLD YOU TO AND LIKE I DID BEFORE I CAME TO VISIT YOU LAST TIME you would see that there are no stations in Red Deer with 94 but lots with the 92 that you tuned on!

Broke-ass, beat down armpit city of the QE2 likely can't afford that shit!

Very important for those who ride bikes.....I tried a tank of 94 in my gixxer, and on WOT acceleration, it would dive bad at about 8-9K, almost throw me over the bars! All because of a dangerous lean condition the ECU couldn't correct....Granted I'm running a full hindle race system without PC3 correction, so I'm a little lean already, but I've heard similar from other riders too.

GREAT NEWS!!!

For all of us NW boys.

Huskey at 250 Hawkstone Drive NW, Calgary.

Is now serving 94 octane! Verified by my buddy who went there today.

They only have 94 and 90 on all 4 of their pumps.

Wanted to let everybody know so that they keep getting it!

Finally i don't have to drive 20-30 minutes to get it. 4 minute drive is much nicer :)

Wow, last I checked Husky was 93? I guess they stepped it up. Question though, is the husky gas running more ethanol than normal? In Vancouver the gas of choice is Chevron 94, nobody likes the Husky stuff because of the higher ethanol content, they say it has some negative side effects (?)...

Anyway I'm dyno tuned for 94 and moving to Calgary next week, so...

2012 bump...

Rage, the Husky on 14th St looks to be shutdown (1st post update for NW?).

I'm hoping it's a quick turnaround but I am not so sure, it could be gone for good... Damn. Other options close by?

That one on 14th that closed was so freaking close to me, but now I just go the opposite way and fill up on the one just past Memorial on 14th, near 10th ave.

Just noticed the Petro in Cranston now has 94 Octane. I just tuned in the fall for 91 since 94 was too much of a pain to get :banghead: Now it's across the street from me.

Anyone else know of any other Petros with 94 octane? I'd like to have more variety than just Husky 94 octane

Is 92/94 better for high end turbo cars? i.e. 911 Turbo?

Only if your ECU is mapped to utilize it. Otherwise, there's no real added benefits.

If your porsche has a boost controller you could probably run a few more pounds of boost with higher octane.

I have a question... Does Husky 94>Petro 94? I've heard that Petro gases are more resistant to knocking?:dunno:

That cranston petro is only like 2 mins away but everyone I know uses Husky 94.

Add 2 degrees of timing.

I personally don't like Petro gas, it doesn't burn very clean.

Not true.

A lot of stock ECU's will advance the timing with higher octane gas....but there won't be enough correction to optimize something like C16 lol.

I measured an 7whp difference on the dyno with my previous Supra when going from Shell 91 to Husky 94.

And if you add more boost, you're taking timing out anyways...
