Report: Local group to bid for Stamps

The Calgary Sun reports that a local group is poised to make an offer to purchase the Calgary Stampeders.

Ted Hellard, chairman of Calgary-based Critical Mass, an Internet marketing/advertising firm, told the newspaper that he is part of a group that plans to make a 'dead firm' offer for the CFL franchise by the end of next week.

The Stampeders are currently owned by Michael Feterik, who purchased the team in 2001 from Calgary businessman Sig Gutsche. He could not be reaced for comment by The Sun.

News reports have said the team could fetch as much as $6 million Cdn. A highly placed CFL source told the Sun that Feterik could have as many as three U.S. buyers interested in the team should the Calgary group's bid be turned down.

The storied franchise has survived turmoil and upheaval on and off the football field the past three seasons, missing the playoffs each year.

The Stampeders - under first-year head coach and general manager Matt Dunigan - opened the season with a win, then lost five straight en route to a dismal 4-14 record. The team pulled the trigger on the league's biggest deal Sept. 26, acquiring quarterback Khari Jones, fullback Randy Bowles and a draft pick from Winnipeg for defensive lineman Joe Fleming, safety Wes Lysack and fullback Scott Regimbald.

WTF? I thought this was the first time in a while we missed the playoffs. Didn't we win the cup in 02?

they just need someone like Roman Abromovich to come in and buy the grey cup for us.

hopefully they'll do better next year.
