Adding Spkr + Sub to micro-system

Well to start it off I want to add external speakers and a sub to my existing boombox. So if any of you people have done this please tell me what your setup is. I want to use the heaphone jack on the boombox to connect the speakers using an adapter not sure which one, possible a Y-adapter. So what I want to know is can I use bookshelf speakers or am I stuck with computer speakers.

You are probably going to need an amplifier which accepts the line-level RCA output form your boombox because it'll be tough finding self-powered if you don't want computer speakers. You can find some nice looking computer speakers though, and they usually come with a sub to fill out the bottom end.
