I was at a friend's house Sunday and at half time of the CFL game I checked her computer. I saw the Windows Update ready to install icon so I clicked on it without seeing what it was installling. I would assume it might be the SP2. Anyways, I did the install, reboot, and things went sour. I got message saying cannot find file system/config/xxx, something to that extend. Possibly corrupted config file? I then boot from the XP CD and then did the chkdsk /r. That's what the Dell people in India said so I did that and left. My friend phoned me later and told me the drive is pooched, and she has to reformat. Is this a known problem with SP2?

This happens when a write isn't fully committed from the write cache before the OS reboots, corrupting the root directory, so at bootup it can't find the files needed for boot. It's a rare timing issue, and is related to certain motherboard chipsets.

And it's annoying as hell.
