Freeway Entrances
This lane is designed to help you enter a freeway. It consists of an entrance ramp where you approach the freeway, an acceleration lane where you match the speed of vehicles on the freeway and a merging area where you join traffic in the right lane of the freeway before the lane ends. Proper use insures the safety of everyone present and makes the task a simple one.
While you are on the entrance ramp, scan the freeway traffic to find a safe gap to fit your vehicle into.
The acceleration lane is separated from the freeway by a single solid white line. It is illegal to cross this solid line to enter the freeway. Use this area to judge the speed of vehicles on the freeway and increase your vehicle's speed to match them.
The merging area is separated from the freeway by a single broken white line. This is the place where you move your vehicle into the gap in traffic already on the freeway. You must signal your intention to move into the through lane even if there is no other traffic in sight. The onus is on you to make the lane change without affecting other traffic already on the freeway.
If you are in the right hand through lane on the freeway, it is a courtesy to those entering to either move into the left lane if it is safe to do so, or to adjust your speed to allow a gap for them. Remember that you would appreciate it if someone did this for you, so it is only fair to do the same thing yourself.
If you are in any other freeway lane, try to avoid a lane change to the right at entrances. This makes merging that much more difficult and could result in a collision.
