I'm looking for parts for my car and everything is so freaking expensive. Is it just me or does it really cost more money to do up a european car?

I might just keep my car stock and save up for something more exotic in the future or something

i find japanese parts are more diverse and have fiercer competition thus driving the prices downward.

european cars are quite pricey to begin with and their mod manufacturers are limited. therefore higher prices.

Yeah dude......just hearing about those body kits is insane!!! I can't imagine what engine mods would cost!

EDIT: ditto to what ricecake said. Japanese sport compact market is the same too. You'll find parts for Honda are considerably cheaper than to Nissan, etc.

well kenny if u put it in perspective your car cost 80,000$ a 91... honda... say crx, cost 10,000....

so..... it's actually not THAT bad....
you're only paying 2.5% of the price
it works out to about the same cost ^_~ that's what u get for buying a car that costs a lot up front!!

I'm not too concerned with power, if I did do any engine mods it be minor stuff like intake/exhaust.

I want to do all show work.....kit/wheels/suspension/stereo but its soo freakin expensive man!!

:dunno:

no man I'm serious
if I redo the engine, and set up a 12-14psi turbo set up, and put in a new camshaft, exhaust, and valve timing...2000 worth of work. most of it is used, like the turbo and such, but it doesn't take much to make an old basic car fast...junkyard turbos are cheap! Plus parts for my car are a dime a dozen...

Lets see...brand new :

Super Sprint 4-1 header: 300
SS Camshaft:210
SS G Grind Cam Gear: 150
Full Exhaust from Downpipe:300
T3 Turbo: 300
1.7L Crank (Used) $50
Valve Springs:75
Ignition: 150
Injectors: 250

Most of the work I can do myself.

Misc Parts: 200
Total Supply Cost: $1985

Budget a few hundred for labor issues.

Complete 60MM Sport Spring Shock Kit, 600.

rubber, 300

its doable...its just not many people put money into GLI's so there isn't alot of info...but my motor is awesome for a turbo...8.5 compression, and was originaly designed for turbo...keep in mind most of this stuff I can find used...

Or I can swap the motor for a 2.0, and the total cost will go up maybe 500...

You really only have to be concerned with three things max for performance on the 323:

Intake. ~$350CDN
Exhaust. ~$1000CDN
Chip. ~ $350CDN

Short of those there are not any major gains short of FI.

Don't be caught in the mentality that Dinan = God either.

Since you said it was a base model it's going to be high. H&R's won't drop it ALL that low. Coilovers are gonna cost you $$$ though.

Just remember even though it might be the base model it still handles VERY good compared to other cars. Even the 320i loaner I had, although slow it handled very well despite the body roll.

I didn't buy the car for performance, it was merely a bargain deal, something that I can drive for a couple years and probably sell for close to the same price. I bought the car mainly to do up the exterior, I want to look pimp! haha

Buying parts for most of the german cars is pretty expensive. In terms of imports, the only guys who get cheap performance parts of the honda people because, well there are about a billion hondas on the road. Higher volume = cheaper prices.

Krautmobile parts are expensive, when I used to have a corrado i got killed on repair parts. Like $450 for a water pump. I can remember dropping at least $800 bones at least twice at Northland VW. Don't know about beemer stuff tho.
