DAMNIT!

I got a phone call from shaw earlier, saying they now have the tools to monitor my usage. They say the limit is 50GB combined upstream and downstream.

Anyone else getting a call? Is there anyway not to have my usage reported as often?

I usually do a minimum of 150GB down a month :(

Looks like I will be going back to Telus...again.

anyone on extreme going over 50gb will be getting a call no doubt, I just think its gonna take em a while to get through all the accounts.

i was near the start of the alphabet, thats probably why

dont forget the trick with telus's 24.99$ monthly fee.

once you are with them 10-11 months tell them you are gonna change ISP and telus in order for you to stay will offer a monthly payment of 24.99$ for a year again

thats cool but I am going to get their 2.5Mbps packaged, 1.5Mbps is WAAAY to slow coming off of shaw extreme at 5Mbps. so its gonna be like $44.95 for me

mm i just switched from telus to shaw, mainly because i kept getting random disconnections and u guys know how bad it is to deal with when ur in the middle of a game. so u might wanna think of that too

GoChris
12-07-2004, 11:38 PM
my past experiences with telus have been good. if you are within a decent range its good but if you are far away from their closest central spot then its not as good.

depends where you live I guess and if you are an avid gamer but ya disconnects or lag spikes would suck ass if you game online.
im gonna call and see how far away I am

Yeah I got called for 250GB and my buddy got called for 600GB. I'm pretty sure he takes the crown for bandwidth abuse.

Never return their call but toning down my d/l.

But the good thing is, I got away with it for a few months when they are not looking.

Anyhow, I'm looking at these guys @ www.3web.com for a back up link in case Shaw ban me. Sounds like $30/month for unlimited high speed access. Not bad for a altenative.

hey i know about 3web

i did my fair share of research, basically they just RENT your shaw account, im not quite sure if ur banned from shaw, if it will work?? since they only rent out shaws acct and take less of a profit. As for unlimited downloads?? there site says this BUT their CS peoples on the phone say its pretty much the same as shaw. SOOO basically you pay a little less for shaw usage, for some this is good, but you get SHITTY customer servise from 3web, for some bad cuz they have a digital cable bundle which saves them money????

GoChris

3web is still a shaw customer and will have to follow the download limit as well, theres no easy loop hole like that, good luck.

Shaw has been able to monitor all modem bandwidth usage EXCEPT Extreme connections until recently. (Extreme uses Docsis modems).

WTF!!!!! Anything over 60 GB/month is fucking crazy

Most i ever did in a month was 60GB and i got a call. i got another call when i did 50/month.

now i average ~20/month :D

Oh, and this is for shaw internet, ive never heard of shaw extreme, im guessing its slightly different

its nice to see how much up/down transfers are going through, its a nice feature they added a while back :D

btw, what the hell are you people downloading or uploading to even get over 100GB? :dunno:

well they started throttling my account. so i phoned em today to cancel the extreme package and will be phoning telus tomorrow for their 2.5M package.

this is shaws troubleshooting steps: "hey get this file off our website", "ok thats fast everything must be normal"

Ok i got a file off the LAN! GREAT! everything must be peachy!
what about the fucking INTERNET!

no offense but thats pretty stupid troubleshooting steps. getting a file off a shaw server from a shaw connection...never leaving a shaw router ever. wow that proves everything!

Remember though, shaw is only responsible for everything inside their network, they aren't responsible for anything outside of it, as they have no control over it.

I'm not defending them, but all ISP's operate this way. As long as you can pull a file quickly from the network, then the speed is fine, outside of it, they cannot control, thus are not responsible for it.

GoChris

sure but maybe one of THEIR routers to one of their peer provider is fucking up, they just dont bother to check anything at all. oh well. im done with them hopefully tomorrow.

and some modems dont report back usage i hear so thats why some lucky few get away with the large downloading and never get called, but to be on extreme you need the new modem which of course has all the report back features so, screwed either way now.

it sucks going from 600kB/s downloads down to less than half :(

I got a call from Shaw last month but I wasn't there to answer it. I saw it on the call ID and I thought it might have been about my usage, but it can't be that much, I usually leave my comp on using BT to get some anime and ps2 games..
maybe the upload is killing me slowly but surely...but they haven't called back since so meh.

For all you guys thinking of leaving Shaw for Telus.

My friend works for Telus and they will be enforcing their bandwidth limits real soon. (20 GB/month for Enhanced High Speed (2.5 Mbps down)). The regular 1.5 Mbps service is only 10 GB month.

And if you are wondering why. It partially due to the new Telus TV service. So better get all your bit torrent movies and albums ASAP.

Just a think about that before you switch from Shaw to Telus.

P.S. I am currently a Telus customer.

thats stupid also.
what is someone to do, seriously, 20gb a month is not alot. even just a casual mp3 downloader would go over that easily, i would think. I am on telus now cause I didnt want to deal with shaw bitching all the time and eventually kicking me off.

so i wonder how long till that goes down the tubes

^^ do you seriously listen to 20 gb of music, and furthermore, how can you justify the need for 200 gb of "legit" data. I mean, it's one thing to be media "pirate", and it's another to have the galls to complain to the local ISP about how much he can steal. :banghead:

Aren't most MP3s like 4-5 MBs/song? So a casual mp3 downloader would "easily" download about 4,000 songs? I think not.

Face it, you are either downloading, ISOs, DVD Rips or an excessive amount of porn if you are hitting 150 GB of data transfer a month. Looks like your free ride on the bandwidth train is going to be over.

There is a way t beat the bandwith usage. But I'm not going to share it. I do support downloading, but the people that abuse it aka hardcore movie downloaders ruin it for everyone else. So I would only be hurting my own latency.

Come on, just PM me..... j/k.

There must be ways to avoid monitoring (like 200GB 1 month and 20GB the next and altenate or something). Both of my friends who I guarantee triple the limit every month never get a call from Shaw or doesn't even get modem usage chart under the Customer Care website.

Well, I guess I have to do my BT @ work with our unlimited Sprint fiber drop.

guys, goto http://secure.shaw.ca login and click modem usage, and you get nice graphs of how much you use... :)

ever since i got my dvd burner, i've been downloading 2-3 4.7GB movies off their newsgroup servers every day....
