I know a few people on here have jobs at the airport, just wondering how I would go about getting one. Something along the lines of a baggage handler, basically anything that I could do while going to school and doesn't require any extensive pre-employment training.
Any suggestions?

Get a job with ATS (airport terminal services)
They are the guys who load/unload guide in/out WestJet planes. I'm not sure what the whole situation in Calgary is like, but in Edmonton, on a 6 hour shift you work for about 2 hours, the rest of the time you get to spend in the "lounge"/lunch room. In the lunch room we have pool/pingpong/xbox/dvds/etc
It's an amazing job.

I work as a baggage handler here in PG. And trust me its not hard to get in, you don't need any big connections or anything. Most people just don't know that. Just dump resumes off at globe ground and I think central mountain air has its own handlers (thats who I work for) westjet has its own (you have to apply online for them and they pick and choose when they need somebody) I'm sure there is plenty more ground companies all over there, just talk to the counterperson of the different airlines and see who handles their ground, then ask how to get a hold of the boss of said company. Easy stuff, a lot of ramp companies hire kids out of high school and/or still in high school I know one of the companies here has a high turnover rate, they are always hiring, most likely the same scenario there

ATS handles WestJet.. man I wouldnt apply for GlobeGround.. in Edmontont they just seem like such a retarded company

My only issue is that I don't exactly have a clean driving abstract, how big of an issue is that?

It's a non-issue if you are not driving, some companies will make you give them one anyway but there is only one way to find out!

ATS handles Westjet flights in every city but Calgary. Westjet has their own TAC (turnaround crew) agents in Calgary.
Pay is alright, benefits are huge.

just before I was going to post some openings at ATS:rofl:
WE ARE HIRING!!!!!!!!!
Chris, I sent you a pm,
baggage handling is a decent job, can be hard at some times, but for the most part very slack.
Im on a 4 on 4 off crew "work" 12hrs a day and usually really work for about 5-7hrs.
The pay kinda sucks to start, but if your motivated and work hard you can move up very fast, when I first started, I knew fuck all about anything to do with planes, now im a ramp lead 10 months later.
anyways, full benefits after 3 months I believe, 100% of everything.
Scott
Im making a link for some info in another thread right now.

Yeah, saturday nights with Westjet was the shit.
There would be a 3 hour break from 10-1am, and we would all cook steak and play video games.
Every hour of work you do, you usually get about an hour to do absolutely nothing.

its based on how fast you learn and how much you want to learn.
If your qualified to do the job, there shouldnt be a problem.

I got mine in 4 weeks, some people get them while there still in training class.
some people dont get them for a long time lol.
but yes, if you dont have a red pass, you need to be escorted around the ramp by a red pass.

It's very random as to how long your red pass can take. Mine took 4 months, but that is a VERY long time to wait, most have it in 3 weeks or so.

Yeah you need a DA within 3 months now. I've avoided it for as long as I can though (I've been there 4 months, still no DA) cuz as I see it, there are NO benefits to having DA, so I havent gotten it yet.

Yeah it totally kicks ass. We have a widescreen TV with XBOX and PS2, DVD player with a TON of DVDs. One guy buys pretty much every game there is for XBOX so we have way over 50 games there. We have a brand new pool table, a ping pong table, dart board, wireless internet.. pretty much everything. I absolutely Love it!

Dude in Edmonton there are no benefits to DA.. the fauthest we have to go to do a flight is about a 1 minute walk away.. dont need anyone to drive you.
The only consequences to having DA is you do shitters/lavs.. and fuck that, lol.

12-17-2004, 12:46 AM
lavs/water is easy, and probably the easiest thing on the flight lol

IT took me forever to get my red pass, but I had my D/A on my green pass.. couldn't be around unless escorted but I could drive in the airport areas.. :D
but that was the distant past.
The guy that does the lavs for Air Canada makes like $25/hour o_O
But he's been with them for 25+ years

yesterday = worst day EVER.
WAY too cold, and then it got worse. A 700 came in, we went to unload it, the beltloader button got frozen on "STOP"
We had to unload 180 total bags without a beltloader, and load 169, again, without a beltloader. We close the AFT door, then over the radio "Umm guys we're sorry but we have to pull a bag" ..of course it was in the furthest back fcking row. It was awesome.

hhaha couldn't tell you... I try to get inside the planes and toss bags around as much as possible to keep the body temp up.
They're pretty relaxed about taking breaks to warm up too, theres always a van or something around to go sit in when there is time.

it sounds like you guys at ATS have the same setup that we have at Halifax ( i work for globeground) we work about 5-6 hours out of a 12 hr shift ( 4 on/ 4 off) we also have the xbox/video/dvd/large screen tv/ dartboard ( but no pool table yet)
I got my red pass in a little over 4 weeks, have been with the company 7 months now and am now a ramp lead. the pay still sucks but benefits are great (100% of everything) down here you have to get your DA (now called AVOP) or you lose the prividge of leaving an hour before the end of your shift if its not busy.
down here the best job seems to be in the bag room, since you are not out in the cold or rain ( heated/air conditioned bag room)
are u guys still hireing over at ATS in calgary?
