Damn second car that I have seen like that. Both had destroyed rims to.

I wasn't there, but the friend who took the pics said that the guys excuse was that "the accelerator stuck, so he pulled the e-brake and spun out. Eventually coming to rest on this median." My personal opinion is that the guy was dicking around and either couldnt handle the car, or, his showing off went terribly wrong.

Jezzzus! An enforced driving school should be a mandatory pre-requisite for driving a car of this caliber and probably for a lot of lesser cars as well! Crying shame!

"The accelerator stuck", ya sure what ever, as long as you keep tellin yourself that, maybe you'll end up beleiving it.

the guy on top gear was saying when he drove it, if he accelerated a BIT to much in the corner the entire car would spin out. takes time to learn how to drive it but when you do its simply one of the best cars on this planet. to bad some middle age crisis dude bought it and trashed it. he probably went from a grand am to this or something lol

So what, did the guy completely hop the median and end up on the wrong side of the road? Because if that’s the case I would suspect a lot of damage to the undercarriage.

I'd say probably over 100k.. people don't realize that all those little carbon and aluminum suspension bits that are now bent are INSANELY EXPENSIVE.

You know, I feel for these cars because they were built for people like us, people that go to race tracks and learn how to drive properly. All the people that can actually afford them are doing so and using these brilliant track cars as penis-extensions.

Money can't buy basic instinctive driving skills..

Everyone whos making fun of him for not being able to drive it.... Honestly, do you think you could? I doubt 99.9% of us have ever driven something like that before so how do you know how hard it is?

If this was the same Vancouver car I saw in Sept, it belongs to some young dot com kid that made it big as a software developer. So it's through hard work, not through lottery or whatever BS some of you haters would like to think ;).

He went from a base Boxster to the Carrera GT. That might be an issue though...

BumpinTalon
12-14-2004, 10:30 AM
don't these things have a big carbon fiber piece that sits under the car for aerodynamics? I bet he broke that and I bet it's $20-$30k on its own to fix, not to mention labor. I be an alignment on a car like that is $8k on its own too :D

this is why they should have the same rules for purchasing this car as they do with the enzo, make it REALLY hard to get ahold of

Well - let's hope someone forced him off the road. Because the only excuse to do THAT to a GT while driving...alone...is STUPIDITY. That car probably never even saw a race track. That's the real shame...oh well...

Haha, poor driver :) I guess it was the thrill of a brand new powerful car. I totally understand  At least he got to enjoy it for a while, while others are reading about it on a forum wishing they could drive one--cept maybe not into a curb. Damn those curbs. :D

You guys are all haters. Cmon, how many of us on this board could handle this 600+ hp race bred monster? Given the guy should be on the track and learning, if I had one I would be trying to drive it hard now and again.

The worst part is that he damaged the car, not that his skills as a driver are shit-tactular.

That is sad for the rare car.

Those stupid accidents are quite common for newbies. And can end your life quite easy when you’re doing something crazy.

If I can afford that GT I think I will book up the track for a week and have some instructors come along.

Here's a pic of the car when I saw it in September:

Pretty sure it's the same car. Looking at the picture of the plate of the crashed car, it looks like I can make out the H and the 8.

WWHHYYYYY:confused: such a rare car, and the damage probly will be into the the 100k region, espeically if the other side is messed. no good at all.

Rich people with too much money, that buy cars that are insanely fast, = amateur drivers = accidents.

Not to stereotype, as some ARE good drivers, but this applies to most.

Er, hardly. I don't recall anyone here having run a Carrera GT onto a meridian.

Me, I think ANYONE who purchases a high-end sports car (ie Carrera GT, Zonda, Enzo, most other Ferraris, Ford GT, Lamborghinis, etc.) should be required to take a driving/racing course before they can license their vehicle. Then we wouldn't see software moguls going from base Boxters to a Carrera GT and somehow figuring they can handle it. :thumbsdow

(Powerful, fast car) + (Inappropriate driver) = (Danger to car, driver, and all around him/her.)

If I ever buy a high-end hypercar, I'll just have it delivered to Skip Barber racing school. I'd pick it up there, because damned if I'm going to look like an ass by driving it into a curb.

Now, as far as this particular incident goes, I'm assuming driver error was the cause, judging from this (http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/m-lounge/6020098-1.html) eyewitness account.

I hope he scared himself, and sells it to somebody who won't wreck a beautiful car.

Hmmm,

http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/m-lounge/6020133-1.html

says that a Carrera GT in West Vancouver got imponded for racing... I wonder if there's any validity to this. Anyone here hear anything about it?

JustinL
12-16-2004, 02:15 PM
If that account is true, the guy was just doing stupid stuff and no special license is going to protect people from themselves. I would also disagree that you have to be a master driver to control these things. Firstly, they have plenty of very sophisticated electronic safety features like traction control and active stability management. Secondly you don't HAVE to do 160 kph in the city. I'm sure this car is more than able to putter around at the speedlimit. Although it may take an hour to get used to the quick clutch and brakes.

The only time you need to be a master with the car is if you are trying to turn quick lap times... or you are blasting around on public roads.

Not quite true, but not quite false either.

Yes, traction control is a wonderful thing, but it does have its limits. From most accounts, the Carrera GT has decent traction control, but once you pass the edge of your traction, that car is gone. The chassis, supension, etc. are very stiff, and thus very unforgiving. It doesn't matter to the car whether you're doing 200 on the track or in a parking lot, it's going to spin out all the same. The reason I'd like to see potential owners take courses is trifold:

1) They realize that their car is made to race at the track, not on the street.

2) They learn how to control their car at the high speeds they are capable of.

3) They learn how to control their vehicle in spins, understeeer, etc. Traction control won't save you if you do something stupid at 200mph.

And, above all, if you're doing high enough speeds to lose control in the city, you really aren't in the correct midset to own or properly enjoy a Carrera GT.

The other formula that works is:

(any car) + (moronic driver) = (danger to universe in general)

Honestly, this works down to the fact that this guys has money.

Sure he drives a $500k car, but I bet those repairs are going make less of a dent in his net worth than a kid who hits a curb in his civic on the way home from his shift at blockbuster.

How many beyond member have fuck up their car doing something stupid? I see morons in sport compacts all the time.
