Car insurance in Canada

Hi, everyone. My family is trying to buy a new vehicles and we are a little annoyed that the insurance rates are so high (we have lived in the US for a few years). Comparing to the US, the annual premium in Canada is thounsands of dollars higher. I know there are higher coverages, but I have also heard that insurance companies are making record profits (2.7 Billion so far this year). Does anyone know why this is the case?

i live in calgary, i have a progressive policy, you can get one too.
