Looking for a compact car to "build".

Criteria are simple... has to be small, light and RWD.... and cheap lol

Any ideas? Pictures would be great....

Thanks,

TE72 Corolla ;) Can be lighter than AE86's, use a ton of the same parts (suspension, rearend, slightly different T50 tranny) and the stock 1.8's can apparently put up with a retarded amount of boost  Downsides though, they're not all that common, so body parts can be a bitch to find (still looking for some frontend shit :(), and like AE86's, the tranny and diff don't hold up to a lot of power...oh, and lack of EFI as well..it's an idea anyhow :dunno: The ones I have seen for sale around town are sub $1000..

no, mine is sitting out front because the MINIMUM boost is 20+ psi, typical dodge junk, full of headaches ;)

you might also want to check out an mr2 (1st gen), corolla gts (hard to find in decent shape any more), 240's can be quite potent, and the car in my sig, the cressida (pretty hefty at just over 3000 pounds, but you can put a turbo 6 into it).

here are some pics to give you an idea of some old school goodness...

the celica/supra that is 2nd last in finboys post...that would be awsome. old corollas would also be nice. and if u got the money an old Z car is pretty sweet. personally though, i'd go with the celica/supra as you can buy them in good condition for pretty cheap, and in bad condition (so you can work on it/build it from scratch) for $700ish.

that is an old celica coupe, it was at v8less this summer, boosted, sds, all the good stuff.

the cressida is pretty much a 4 door supra, and they are heavy from the start, but they are pretty much a 4 door supra, which means the supra motor will fit in there (7m-gte) and with enough work, the 1jzgte (japanese 3rd gen supra motor, same style as generalT on perf-shop), and a few have even put a 2jzgtte into cressida's (4th gen supra, like mau's).

another swap that might intrest you is a 2nd gen mr2 turbo motor into a 1st gen mr2, light car, lots of power, go-kart handling...

ae86 is the chasis code for the 1984-1987 corolla GTS (the orange and white cars that i posted) but often suffer from rust.

the 200sx (red car that isn't in motion) looks very similar to a GTS but already comes with a turbo motor and independent rear suspension, plus i find that they are usually in better shape. if you wanted to upgrade the motor, the ca18det (twin cam turbo 1.8 from japan) will work quite nicely and they are relativly cheap, as most people go for the later motor's (sr20, twin cam turbo 2.0L).

1st generation rx7 if you're not afraid of working on rotaries.

all those older japanese cars are the same thing... corollas, celicas, datsun 1200s, so on... they all have VERY similar dynamics and parts. some of the older mazda rx3 parts swap over with datsun parts :burnout:

I'll say... bmw 2002. those were badass little cars.

and its a four door...nobody will see it coming!

one of my next cars is gonna be a RA23 celica notchback.
I almost had 2 of them this summer, but the guy changed his mind and refused to take my deposit damnit. :banghead: Too bad money doesn't always talk, can't blame the guy though those cars are beautiful.

That's right, MkIII's are pigs! ;) Though they do have better suspension to counter some of that heft..not sure how I'm going to work out the rear camber on the MkII..

2.0L twin turbocharged DOHC 24 valve inline 6..220-230ish hp if i remember right. It would be a waste in an mr2. especially with the 3sgte availiable and it being much more sensible.

excelent choice toma, if you want a turbo supra motor, i would recomend checking out...

http://www.jdmsource.ca <----- he is a member on this board as well
the motor you want is a "7M-GTE" and it is under the toyota section.

for further info on cressida's, check out...

mx73someday also has a cressida and he is on this board as well (converted to 5 speed, and swapped the motor).

good luck with the car

can you tell me about the motor?? displacement, pistons, rods, shortblock...

ie, will it turbocharge to 500 hp reliably?? ;)

not keen on a swap... yet

wont use this car for sure yet either,,,just came up cheap so Rick grabbed it for me.

Thanks

motor should be a 2.8L inline six, same motor used in the second generation supra. not sure about boosting the 5m but i know the 6m(japanese inline 6) can respond quite well to boost. i wouldn't think them too different but i think 500 hp would probably be more then pushing the limit ;)

okay it depends on what year of cressida you have.
there is the 81-84 cressida aka mx63. from 1981-83 they came with a 5M-E SOHC engine. 8.8:1 compression. something like 115hp and 145lb ft of torque stock.

in 84 they put in the 5mge. this engine had DOHC, 12 valves, the same compression, and it had around 150hp and 160lbft of torque.

in 1985 came a body change to the mx73 style. but the engine remained the same until 1986, when the mx73 got higher compression pistons at 9.5:1 and some other minor mods, which made it produce 155hp and 165lbft of torque.

displacement for all the 5m series is 2.8L, inline 6 cylinder configuration.

will it turbocharge to 500hp? depends. if you mean stock everything and just throwing on a turbocharger, i have read that no, it will not. it will hit around 300whp before hitting its limit. sometimes a bit higher sometimes a bit lower.

one good advantage is that the exhaust manifold is extremely similar to the 7mgte ones from the MK3 supra turbos. so basically, you can bolt on the MK3 turbo manifold and turbo. its also nice because of all the upgraded variants of the CT - 26 out there.

anyways, the best forum for the cressida imo is a MK2 supra forum, because theres some decent info on the engine there seeing as the MK2 supras share the same engine...

www.celicasupra.com

good luck with the car

yep.... she is a DOHC :poosie:

Its an auto though and IRS in the back... wonder if the trans/diff will take the power as well :dunno:

Crap, time to research.

If we part it out, is the motor etc worth anything??

5 spds werent sold in canada. The tranny/diff again is interchangeable with the supra ones, but it requires some work.

IMO the motor is not worth much. I own 2 cressidas, and if i need a motor, other than the block in the garage, i would just go to pick your part and buy one for cheap seeing as they are like 100-200$ depending on the sale going on haha. then again you never know, you might luck out and someone might need one bad.
