Hi, I got a new dell computer for christmas.. Its a 3.0 ghz but only came with 256 ram. I haven't popped open the box yet, but I'm pretty sure its dual sticks of 128. I recently acquired a 512mb pc2700 stick. So would I be able to take out both sticks and put in the 512? or can i keep 1 128 and the 512? I'm clueless when it comes to ram.

Thanks for the help

Depends how many slots there are. If you have 3 then you can put the 512 stick in. If you have 2 then you can take out a 128 and put the 512 in.

There are 2 slots the manual says. So would the 128mb and 512mb add up to 640? Or would it be some type of add average?

Make sure you put the largest chip in the first slot.

Also, the ram will only run at the slowest speed of the two sticks. If the 512 is faster, ie PC3200 and the smaller stick is PC2700 or lower, stick with the single PC3200 stick, or else you will lose performace.

I guess it also depends on the ratio you use and what CPU and mobo you got too.
