I'm pretty sure it's a pride thing between anglers who go out and try to catch "the big one". Considering the size of the catfish and the difficulty in catching them, it's all about competition.


It can also be dangerous: Noodlers hold their breath for long periods under water and sometimes come up with fistfuls of agitated snakes or snapping turtles instead of fish.
