View Full Version : Looking for historical movie titles

I've always been into movies that show true events from history (or some sort of version of history, even if it's fictional) and I've seen alot of them, but I know I'm missing a ton. I just saw Troy tonight and LOVED it, so I'm looking for stuff somewhere along those lines.

Going right from memory I've seen the following titles:

- Troy
- Four Feathers
- Braveheart
- The Patriot
- A Knight's Tale
- Captain Correlli's Mandolin
- A League of their own
- Mad Love
- Girl with the Pearl Earring

Hmm I know there are others but I'm really going from memory here. What can everyone recomend for some good movie watching for me? :)

I think you mean period pieces. I don't think A Knight's Tale was based on true events.

In which case, I would suggest movies like:
Gladiator
Rudy
Passion of the Christ
Saving Private Ryan

Haha yeah, what you said :) That's what I meant by the

"I've always been into movies that show true events from history (or some sort of version of history, even if it's fictional)"

But thanks for clarifying Gavin! These are all good suggestions, though I have seen (and own) Rudy :D

goodfellas, bugsy, the untouchables, blow, Casino (not sure if it's based on a true story.) The thing is there are so many movies that are based on real events, not really a point in naming them all.:dunno:

Gandhi

Parts of the Godfather Triology are based on real (or widely believed) events.
- Godfather 1 - Johnny Fontane is believed to be based on Frank Sinatra
- Godfather 2 - Hyman Roth is loosely based on Meyer Lansky, RICO trials

Ghandi's an awesome movie and I saw the Godfather (haha actually my dad made me sit through it with him) Not a bad set of movies, but the mafia stuff doesn't do much for me.

Thanks again guys, you've reminded me of some of the good stuff I've seen (Ghandi, King Arthur, ect.) and brought some new titles to my attention! :)

Just saw the Aviator... was pretty interesting, too bad it didn't cover his entire life... but then I guess it would have been a few days long.

As far as Vietnam war movies go, you should see Platoon. Won best picuture and best director among others and is still a great movie.

Two more excellent war movies:

The Killing Fields (1984) starring Sam Waterston
Sydney Schanberg is a New York Times journalist convering the civil war in Cambodia. Together with local representative Dith Pran, they cover some of the tragedy and madness of the war. When the Americans forces leave, Dith Pran sends his family with them, but stays behind himself to help Schanberg cover the event. As an American, Schanberg won't have any trouble leaving the country, but the situation is different for Pran; he's a local, and the Khmer Rouge are moving in.

Under Fire (1983) starring Nick Nolte
Nicaragua 1979: Star photographer Russel Price covers the civil war against president Somoza. Facing the cruel fighting - people versus army - it's often hard for him to stay neutral. When the Guerillas have him take a picture of the leader Rafael, who's believed to be dead, he gets drawn into the happenings. Together with his reporter friends Claire and Alex he has to hide from the army.

I was just going to suggest Life of Brian. I'm sure Bigus Dickus was an actual historical figure.
I love Pride and Prejudice if you're into the whole Jane Austen thing.

Could you explain what is historical about clockwork orange? It takes place in the FUTURE. Also face/off? Clerks? Nothing historical about any of those movies.:dunno:

Oops yeah I completely misread the thread :nut:

Gia would be the only notable to watch. Based on a true story. Supermodel in the 70's and her downward spiral into drugs eventually leading her to become one of the first woman to have succombed to AIDs.

Bye Bye Blues would be another sensible flick.
