View Full Version : Crashing when new Ram installed

I wanted to upgrade my computer from 256mb of Ram to 512mb today so I went and bought another stick of 256mb ram today and installed it.

Now I looked at the manual and all and I looked inside my comp to see what kind of ram I had and my current was SDRAM PC133 256mb 32x64 (16 chips). My manual says my mother board has a max of 512mb of Ram, so there was no problem in buying 256mb more. Now I went out and bought another stick. The exact same, only difference was the manufacturer.

Now when I installed the Ram it booted up fine and my comp recognized that i had approximately 512mb of Ram (when I checked in my system information). So I thought all was good. Then it started happening. Unexpected crashes. I couldn't even stay in my xp account for more than 5 minutes. It would crash over and over. I even switched the slots that the Ram were in, and tried again to no avail.

I have completely removed the new stick and replaced the old one back into the first slot (I only have 2 slots). And now the comp hasn't crashed unexpectedly.

Can anyone help me out?

Sounds like bad ram buddy.

Take it back and try a new stick.

Most of the time it will recognise the increased size, however it wont function properly.

Common issue.

If the second stick doesn't work, your mobo could be one of those dumb picky ones that wont allow cross branding.

I personally never cross brand my memory, buy the same brand all at once.

Do you think its best to just get 1 stick that is 512 mb? That way its only 1 brand?

If you're motherboard only support 512MB MAX and has 2 slots, chances are that it won't support more than 256MB/slot. And it also may not take double side memory which most 512MB comes in.

Don't waste your time and just get it swapped.

It is most likely bad RAM. But you could always try to remove your old ram and plug the new one into that slot and see if crashes on you. If it doesn't crash on you try it in the other slot. The DIMM slot could be hooped too.

So I did what Jeremy told me to do and I put the new ram into slot 1 by itself and it works so far, and there are no problems. So I'm thinking it could be slot 2 is dead.

Now I have another problem. I looked in the manual for my motherboard and the paper copy i have says that i can only have 512mb max. Then i d/l the pdf version from the site
and it says I can have 1gb max...... so which copy do I trust?

Here's the link to my mother board. Mind you its one of the crappiest motherboards out there. "SY-K7VEMPRO" (http://www.soyogroup.com/products/proddesc.php?id=41)

Also on that link I put up you can see that it says 512 mb max is supported but if you download the pdf manual under product support you will see it says 1gb max...:dunno:

Since the ram works in one slot and but not the other. And on POST it recognizes the both stick. I would also check the capacitors near the RAM slots (and all over your motherboard). If they are bulging or leaking that is your problem there.

I checked all the capacitors near the RAM slots and all over the mother board and there is no bulged or leaking ones.

Also what cycle speed should I set it at? I have the option of 2 or 3.

I picked a stick of pc133 512mb SDRAM today and put it into one slot. Now it registers the stick, but how do i know if it can use all 512?
