I was going to buy the 20GB Sony MP3 player, but I decided against it since you have to convert all your mp3s to atrac and I don't mind that, it'sjust a waste of time.

I don't really have a budget, as long as the MP3 player works in the UK I'm fine.

So I need your input guys, which MP3 player would you buy? And don't just blurt out "Ipod!!!!" give me reasons why I should buy the MP3 player you suggest.

PS. Looking for a MP3 Player with 5GB and more.

Thanks.

Well man, fuck, really man, the Ipod is your best bet if you ask me. The interface is unbeatable, thats what has stopped me from going elsewhere even after I have gone through two already.

Check out the Archos Gmini 400, only slightly more than the Ipod and it plays MPEG4! Nice size too

I don't recommend Irivers/Creative just due to the size. But if your ok with that, I hear both companies make fantastic products.

Best of luck,

Neil

I have a Creative Zen 5 GB....I love it .. absolutly no problems with it in my mind. With a removable battery (including an extra battery) and a few more features then the Ipod MINI, about the same size...$50 cheaper....just seems like good value to me. I would recommend it! If you have any questions about it please feel free to PM me.

Sony converts mp3, wav, windows media, CD's to ATRAC because ATRAC has a wider frequency range then MP3 thus sounding better under a lower compression. That's why the Sony 20GB can hold upwards of 13 000 tracks and the 20 GB iPOD can only hold roughly 5000 songs. Its also a propriatary format to Sony.

Also, they are said to release a firmware upgrade that allows you to drag and drop MP3 files without conversion into the unit. Similar to the NWE series Sony players.

Neil4Speed: I just saw a review on Archos Gmini 400 on cnet, and the person mentions the Archos Gmini 420. I searched for it but found nothing. Do you know anything about the 420?
This MP3/other players really caught my attention; I'm trying to find info on the 420.

I had my heart set one the Son yMP3 player I also thought if they didn't come out with the firmwire upgrade I could still convert the track upload them on the MP3 Player and then just delete the converted files off my computer. But I don't know why, I just went against it, I think it's because of all the 'negative' reviews I read.

I guess I have a lot of thinking to do, especially when there’s so many MP3 players and you want to spend the right amount of money on the one you want.

I couldn't find anything about it either but could it be this Archos av 420 that he was talking about? Also I recommend that you don't get a 5 gig mp3 player since for 70-100 more you get 15 more gigs.

Bloody hell, so many different ones, but so price, I really really like the AV 420, but image getting it in 100GB (easily over $1000 - not the kind of money I want to spend).

I don't want an Ipod, I want something with proper rechargable batteries and all that, but I think the GMini 400 might do it. Only thing that make sno sense, is that you can playback MPEG-4, but theres not stereo on the thing, only earbuds, what gives? :dunno:

EDIT: Actually I might aswell save the extra300 dollars and buy a Sony MP3, all I gotta do is convert it no big deal, i can delete the ATRAC3 file from my comp, once it's on the actual MP3, yea?

I have been seriously looking for one of those for atleast 6 weeks. Everytime I go somewhere its just sold out. The main reason I want one is its use as an external hard drive.

i have the sony mp3 you're talking about and personally i don't think the whole ATRAC thing is too big of an issue, its more of a problem with the transfering rate. i remember trying to put 300 songs on the thing all at once took me like 2 hours plus, other than that, i'm loving that thing. small, sleek, and most of all longer battery life than ipods. the first time using it after a full charge it lasted about a week which includes time transferring songs, so approximately around 20 hours of use, and ipods dont' even do half of that, and i hate charging so i'm glad i choose this over ipod

Good luck on finding one since it has been discontinued for a while. There might be a few left at these places.

Actually, if you like the archos av420, then you should wait and check out the new Archos PMA430.

I have and ipod and have tried most of the other mp3 players out there (I also have some 512mb mp3 players and some media based mp3 players) and out of them all I still like the ipod the most. But then I played around with the av420 and I loved it right away. Not only was it good for mp3's but the video feature was a big plus, specially on vacations.

I was gonna get one till I noticed they came out with the new PMA430, its basically the same as the av420 cept it has a touch screen with all the PDA functions that a regular PDA has, its linux based so you can run third party programs, it has a USB host so that you can connect cameras and download pictures and all, it is also 30GB, and lastly it is wifi so that you can surf the web and such. Bit pricy but if I get a PDA and a video/mp3 player it would be about the same price.

K I have rambled long enough, hope that helps

And thanks for the link eblend I've been looking for a place to buy it in Canada, and in Calgary is even better. Plus memory express is $40 cheaper then radioshack the only other place to carry it.

How about this one? It's sooo tiny.

Doesn't hold enough, but 5,000 is a lot!

chalk up another vote for zen micro!!!! I absolutely love mine, and if you can live with 5 gigs, definitely give one a try. about the only criticisms are the crappy software and the microphone. however, creative has just released a firmware upgrade that allows you to transfer songs without installing drivers

For all you Sony haters... remember the Sony HW-HD1?
http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/resize.php?size=200&filename=sonynwhd1walkman_1.jpg

Now out:

Sony NW-HD3 Network WALKMAN plays MP3 & ATRAC3plus music (http://products.sony.co.uk/sony_nw-dh3.asp)

PS. Whats the diff between the MHD1 & HD2, is it just the faceplate colour change? :dunno:
