I want to buy a DVD burner for my laptop. I know it will have to be external and I will probably go the firewire route. I'm just wondering if there's anything I should know before I buy one. There are a bunch on ebay that look pretty good to me and I will give you guys a link to a NEC that looks alright to me:

Let me know if you guys think this is worth buying.

Thanks Alot,

Marc

ya that would probably work good. if you can get it for a good price I say go for it. If it were me I wouldn't pay more than about $90-100 USD to get it, since with $15 more shipping you are looking at $120 canadian, assuming you are even in Canada.

USB 2.0 and firewire are about the same speed - save the cost of a firewire card if your laptop already has USB 2. If it's old USB 1.1 you need the firewire. :D

Firewire has a higher sustained throughput where as usb 2.0 has a higher burst rate. Over time firewire will yield better transfer rates on large files where USB 2.0 is faster to burst small amounts of data.

Yes but both are sufficient for a DVD burner. Unless you can get a firewire card for dirt cheap, or are planning on having an external harddrive.
