Somewhat same thing happened to my friends brother. He was getting chinese food in Chinook and he left his bank card there. The kid working went and looked on the camera, got the pin and then he took out 1 grand (which isn't much to my friends bro) so my friends bro went there asked for his card the kid said no. Well he just lost it and punched the kid.

I am always cautious while buying something from macs now. They have 2 comps and right when you hit in your pin they go and hit some button. It could be for a reciept but I dont know.

This could happen anywhere, it's not too hard to get credit card numbers from the retail side. The part of the receipt you sign shows your full credit card number and expiry date, and the security code is right where your signature on your card is. So the clerk just pretends to look closely at your signature to check it is the right one, gets your security number, then you hand them the part of the receipt you sign and bam you just gave away your credit card number.

i worked at a full serve gas station, this kid was taken peoples credit cards and swiping them once for gas and once for cash, all in all he took about 1500 dollars, i see no reason to use a credit card for anything other than large purchases, the more you use it, the more likely this shit will happen

I'm reading some of the replies and here's my justification for not carrying money and always using CCs. I don't like carrying cash on me because I go through it really quickly by buying stupid things. I have more restraint if I'm putting things on cards. I also hate carrying change so CC is more convenient but debits have charges on them after a certain amount so the CC is the best way to go (providing you pay them off every month)

Would it help if I put black tape over the security number?

I agree. - I'm one of the people who uses credit cards for everything - I like the fact that I can keep track of purchases more so then with cash purchases (where I tend to forget about buying things)....also, i'm paranoid about losing cash, and change is a hassle so card works for me. Also with credit cards, the benefit I see over debit cards is that they don't have a service charge.

How is that possible? When did Wendy's start taking CC? It would cut out large chunks (if not all) of their profits since they sell very low cost goods. This is the reason why no fast food places accept CCs, including Wendy's.

I am one of the unfortunate ones who's had BOTH debit and credit cards skimmed and copied. With my debit card, I think they were using a track 2 scanner too (i was told track 2 contains your pin #, so they don't even need to watch you enter your pin).

If this happens to you, the only thing you need to do is go to your bank and let them know what happened. Almost all banks have a commissioner of oaths (in Calgary anyway) so they'll make you sign and swear that it is not you making those transactions.

Dropping by the police station and making a report doesn't hurt either (there's actually a pretty large file there for skimmed debit and credit cards).

Then you wait 2-3 weeks for the bank to investigate, and then you get your money back.

If you don't, you can call the obudsman for all canadian banks and talk to them about what you can do (it never got this far for me).

Unfortunately for me, my debit card was skimmed right when I was purchasing my home. I had to delay the lender several times and explain to them what was going on :D

I have read that on average, people spend 20% more when they use only credit cards.

I've noticed that with my spending too... when I have no cash, I tend to spend more... swipe it and forget it.

Many fast food places do take credit cards. Many which are set up with a transelect for debit are also set up for Visa/MC and sometimes American Express.

yeah, just because they don't accept visa doesn't mean that their machine isn't set up to take visa.

superstore doesn't accept visa either, but if you go through the till with $300.00 in groceries they'll take it.

sounds like these guys took the visa for the purpose of stealing, not because they "take visa".

I had about 250 in groceries and they refused my VISA. I had to use the shady ATM to get money out.

well i guess you can officially thank W5 on CBC for this, they were afterall the ones who aired the special on debit card fraud, they even went to so far to show all the criminals what equipment to use and even where to get it. :thumbsdow

I work there, honestly.. if you are nice the the cashier.. they will let you take it.. they will call a superviser, or just take it.. Just say you don't have any other kinds of cards.. dont go bitching at them saying you got to use it before, or they wont let you...

Anyways.. i go 2 wendys in westhills alot, and my bank card was canceled becuase they said, someone had access to my card, other then me.. it happened to my buddy this morning aswell..

I use cash for anything under 20 bucks, and I've still been tagged twice by someone who scammed my credit card number.

The key now is to make sure the card never leaves your sight - if the kid palms it and it dips under the counter for a sec you've probably been skimmed. And cover your pin.

Looks like this is a growing problem for debit/cc users. You can dispute the charges for your credit card, but are you SOL if they drain your bank accounts with withdrawals? :dunno:

For me, I rarely use my debit or c/c, it's 99% cash transactions. I'll occasionally bust out the debit or c/c if I'm making a larger purchase but that doesn't happen too often. Not having to worry about getting my cards skimmed is a bonus I guess.

then theres always the fear of getting jumped...hah jokes
yah cash transactions are the best specially for saving money

little saving technique i use...only spend bills...whatever change you get from the bills you throw in a bucket...then end of the year just count it up and you got yourself enough change to buy christmas presents for everyone.

^^^
haha

I usually carry just enough cash on me to get myself through the day, nothing crazy, and nothing to bring unnecessary attention. I just don't see the need to debit or charge everything, you probably spend a lot more that way.

I agree, I think it's pretty easy to save money if you stick to a cash basis. Not too many people have the discipline to pay off their c/c, January is the busiest time of the year for debt counsellors.

Man, I used to get made fun of for being so paranoid with my cards, but here we go...

Sucks that it happened to so many people on here, and best of luck in getting everything straightened out.

Wish they would tell you which employee did it... then you could get some personal retribution!

I think the opposite. If I had cash on me, it's tangible and I can physically feel my pockets/wallet getting lighter. Whereas with debit and CCs, I can't see it go down. As a result, I spend a lot more than I planned on originally. Also, service charges piss me off, so I use cash.
