Since there were so many good responses to the RRSP VS Mortgage argument thought I would ask this. Does anyone know if someone who hasn't filed taxes for 3 years (but should receive refunds) will also get GST cheques from those past years or are they out of luck? Not sure how that works.

You should still receive those GST cheques for the past 3 years provided you qualify (in other words, didn't make too much money in those years) and you file your taxes.

You have to file your returns to get the GST rebates.

Yes you will get those old GST cheques, if you qualify. It's not a crime not to file your taxes IF you don't owe anything. It's only a crime if you get an order to file and you don't file... something they do after 3-4 years of non filing.

If you do owe money, it's still not a crime to file your taxes on time. But the penalties for late filing are harsh.
