At 8:43 PM Calgary EMS responded with Calgary Police Service and Fire Department, to a motor vehicle collision on Glenmore Trail at Deerfoot. Following extrication, the 36-year-old driver of a mini-van, which rolled over, was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. A 12-year-old male passenger of the same vehicle was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.

The 40-year-old male driver of the second vehicle, a pickup truck, was transported to the Rockyview General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At 8:45 p.m. 2002 June 20, the 38 year old male driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer sport utility motor vehicle sustained fatal injuries when his vehicle collided with another vehicle, then the center dividing median before rolling over, landing on its roof.

The collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Glenmore Trail S.E. just prior to where Glenmore passes under Deerfoot Trail. The Explorer was travelling in the right lane of Glenmore prior to the accident, and upon attempting a left lane change, struck a Mazda B2200 truck occupying that lane. The collision caused the Mazda to strike the retaining barrier, and the Mazda stopped abruptly, however the Explorer lost control, struck the same barrier and rolled over onto its roof.

The driver of the Explorer was wearing a seatbelt, however received fatal injuries as a result of the crushing of the passenger compartment.

Initial investigations revealed that the road surface, alcohol and excessive speed were not factors in this collision, however driver error appears to be a significant factor. The pre-teen passenger in the Explorer sustained minor injuries, as did the driver of the Mazda truck.

We are seeking any additional witnesses to this collision and ask that they call the Calgary Police Service Communications Section at 266-1234. The name of the deceased will be released at a later date after next of kin notification.
