Ok lemme hear your input of the pros. and cons of these two cars... I am interested in buying the GTI but recently ive heard many bad things about reliablity? and that ford has been making improvements. also ive heard the SVT is an amazing handler...

What do you think?

SVT FOCUS -> http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/svt_focus.asp

GOLF GTI 2001 1.8T -> http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?modelid=9680&src=VIP&tab=2&sub=0&trimid=92863#trimsel

thanks, spleeb.

VW 01 is faster if you get a 500 dollar chip, and the suspension is shit so 700 for that. Stock for stock I'd say SVT better but that's not really fair either as it's factory modded. The focus has had boatloads of recalls but should be done by now, and the golf probably has the fixed coils/window regs etc.

Drive em both and see which you like, but mentally add power to the VW. :D

hmmm... very good response.. will have to test both for sure, and i would be chipping the 1.8 too which would give something like 195 hp... reliability wise (long run) what would you think? just generally.

VW, one word......torque

EDIT: I noticed you are looking at an 01.....If you don't plan on modding, go with an 02, they have the 180hp/180tq engines in them.....All in all, after chip exhaust and stuff the two are apart by about 10hp/10tq, but may as well start with the 02....If you go with a late 02 model, the seats are different, as is the exhaust exit through the bumper.....

the only thing the svt has going for it is exclusivity, great car but the golf can pretty much do the same thing (probably even better than a stock svt) with a bit in mods :dunno:

I would go with the Focus because the roads aren't littered with them. The Focus was the only domestic that made it onto the consumer reports choice of cars. And they're such a sleeper car too - they don't look much different from the non SVT ones.
