not sure about the idle RPM...but they can rev to 16-17 THOUSAND RPM...the limiter is changed depending on top speed rquired and for track conditions...

They idle at 4000rpm.

Idle speed varies from about 4000rpm to 6000rpm between manufacturers.

Have you guys seen the Renault F1 engine dyno video from the 80's? It's even crazier. They ran it in a dyno room on a race simulation.
