Apparently its like that in the states, they have the exits numbered... would kinda make things less complicated for directions imo.

Ya I just noticed them last night. Why are the numbers so high? I mean Glenmore when headed northbound on Deerfoot is 420 or something. I don't see how they really help with directions. Isn't it easier to remember the name of a road then the number?

i havn't noticed them here yet but i know the numbers on the signs in the states have the numbers in order so you know if you need exit 84 and you just saw exit 80 you have 4 more to go.

I think the numbering is based on the number of kilometers from the "start" of Hwy 2.... but where does it start? I would guess it's from the south counting north. (I haven't been on Deerfoot for a while to see which way the numbers go.) I think there is much more than 420km of Hwy 2 north of us.

In the States, typically Mile 0 on a certain stretch of highway start at one state border and then starts counting up in one direction. eg. if it's west to east and runs for 200miles, then west border = Mile 0 and east border = Mile 200. If you're going westbound then it counts down.

The reason? Maybe it's a better integration of Hwy 2 into this Canadian-US-Mexican highway corridor. I think I saw this somewhere in the news way back when... I'm just a nerd for stupid trivia like this.:dunno:

That's probably what it is. Hwy 2 starts in Cardston and is roughly 215km to the south end of deerfoot and 22x.

But Glenmore being exit 420 doesn't make sense... especially north bound. Hmmmm

They are put up by Carmacks. I know they have the deerfoot maintenace contract with AB, Probably just spending their budget so that can get more $$$ next year :thumbsdow

Carmacks doesn't decide what signs to install... every decision to move/install/remove a sign is done by the government/city. All they do is follow orders and maintain what exists.

Hmmm... that's what I was thinking too. There is no way that Cardston (or whatever town on the border) would be 420km from here. I hope the 420 won't be miles either... :dunno:

Having said that, yeah, Carmarcks just maintains Deerfoot on behalf of the province, that's all... no way would they have any decision on what signs to put on the road.

I rather like the exit numbes in the US. On my return trip from NYC, almost every state I went through, the numbers were counting down from when I entered the state.
So, every state I went through, I knew exactly how far it was to the next state. Kind of neat I guess.

This is a weird one, as long as I can remember the exits have been numbered back home.. never payed attention to it out here though... It's simple as hell, take exit 24, go down past the so and so....

I think these are great for people who don't know the freeway all that well. When I drove in the US, the numbers on the freeways were extremely helpful in finding your way around. Not only can you identify your exit easier, you can tell when your exit is coming close or if you've gone too far.

they arent distance because they are sequential regardless of where the last one was.

There are carpool lanes on I-5 in Orange County north of the C-1 exit.

In some places, there are exits from the carpool lanes that are not accessible from the regular lanes.

Go here to see more:

This list contains only exits accessible from the regular lanes.

This thread needs to be awarded something for being the thread with the most mentions of "420" on the entire forums.

They were talking about doing this a few years ago, at the time it was just on signs that were replaced from normal wear.
