P21S High Performance Wheel Cleaner About $21-22 from Car Care Smart. They come in the liquid or gel form. Needs agitation to get set in grim off.
Dupont Teflon Wheel Cleaner works even better but I can't find it locally.
I don't know what others would use to protect the wheels but I would just use the wax I use on the body. Maybe a synthetic polymer so it lasts a little longer.

Megs has some good products. Readily available and inexpensive.
I'm a big fan of Zaino products to seal lasts about 6 mths

I second the Megs hot rims cleaner. I use that on my wheels and it works great. There other products are great too...

- marc Does this stuff clean off caked on brake dust without scrubbing?

All depends on how caked on it is. Some agitation may be required if its beyond normal accumulation.
