NEW YORK -- Trying to show that small doesn't have to equal cheap, Hyundai Motor America unveiled the 2006 Accent subcompact on Thursday in New York.

"The Accent has always been a popular vehicle, but recently, this segment has become highly competitive," said Bob Cosmai, CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

Cosmai believes offering an Accent in one well-equipped trim level will attract customers who may have drifted to competitors or considered a larger used car instead. It goes on sale this fall.

The 2006 Accent is 2 inches longer in wheelbase and overall length than its predecessor. It also is 1 inch wider and 3 inches taller.

The more powerful 1.6-liter engine features variable valve timing and delivers 110 hp and 107 pounds-feet of torque.

Small cars have taken a hammering in recent safety tests.

However, Hyundai is equipping the 2006 Accent with dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for front and rear occupants. As for amenities, standard features include CD stereo, tilt steering wheel, halogen headlamps, driver and passenger vanity mirrors and a split fold-down rear seat with a folding center armrest equipped with dual cupholders.

On the exterior, body-color door handles, mirrors and body-side molding are standard.

Don't all new cars come with these things nowadays? I find this list rediculous! Especially the halogen headlamps bit...

The car looks nice, but I see bits of other cars. The front totally apes the Corolla, right down to the little bump on the grille to house the H logo. JDM and Euro Corollas are like this! The rear door is very Mazda3-ish, and it even looks a little Daewoo-ish as the rear lights look a bit like the Chevrolet (Daewoo!) Optra.

The side mouldings look completely wrong; they should be a foot lower, level with the rear bumper. IMO, Hyundai could have done better.

I'm curious if they'll bring back the hatch, as that car remains one of the best selling small cars in Canada.

it was ugly when it first came out, it was ugly last year, and by the looks of it, it's still ugly.

maybe they can pay toyota some royalties for jacking the front end of the corolla.

still ugly.

Most car manufacturers still state Halogen headlamps as a safety feature.

They also state they have seat belts. I don't understand why you think it is rediculous?

Here is the description of the Corrola. It specifies Halogen. What is the big deal?

It really isn't a big deal. I know a lot of manufacturers advertise seatbelts, halogen lights, etc as safety features or as items in a "long" list of standard features. Some of these things are required by law (such as seatbelts) and others (such as halogen lights) have virtually become standard that advertising them looks more like a lame effort to make the standard equipment list look bigger. That's where my complaint was directed at.

Notice I didn't complain about fold-down rear seats or especially the curtain airbags, as not everybody has them. to Hyundai for offering them on their cheapest car.

Having said all this, I would still like to try out the new Accent when it arrives here.

Toyota does it's fair share of copying. Think LS430.
