The fitter you get the lower your resting heart will be...and be sure to check it in the morning while still laying down to get a true reading.....Also for me certan times of the cycling season my heart rate will differ depending on my training and my conditioning, in jan/feb my resting heart rate was 45/58 bpm, now with a fair bit of training is is at 35/47 bpm depending on the workout the day before... also be careful of the food you eat as too much booze and too much salt will affect heart rate...and drink tons of water...

Your resting heart rate is also effected by the state of rest that you are in....I know of people that suffer from sleep apnea that saw a reduction of 10 beats per minute imediately upon receiving treatment.
You've probably already noticed that your resting heart rate increases when you have a cold, etc.
