We average 13GB a day in text alone. Doesn't include stats from our image and video server which is roughly the same amount of usage. So that's 26GB/day. 780GB/month. Find a quote for hosting to see how much it costs for 780GB/month, and you'll be shocked haha.

Interesting topic regarding costs in running beyond because we will be doing some cost cutting measures soon on beyond. Bandwidth usage is skyrocketing so we will need to control it if we continue growing at the rate we are.

rage2's car fund is getting dangerously low so we need to make sure beyond doesn't eat it all up haha.

need to get rid of some of that bad garbage on beyond.ca!

what many sites have been doing is offering a premium membership! which users have to pay for, but allows many more features that aren't allowed to non-paying members!

its nice that its free, but it would be nicer to have options that non-paying members would not be able to access.

but then again! who wants to pay!

definately need to stop/limit attachments or something becuase I think this is the only site I go to where you can post as many attachments as you want, its nuts really. Look at all you guys whoring up the "post your desktop" thread, thats a HUGE waste of resources IMO.

kenny
04-13-2005, 11:18 PM
As of right now, there are no plans to have a premium membership option on beyond. We are currently able to provide all features to everybody.

One thing that will be changed shortly is the attachment system to help lower bandwidth usage. Attachments will have to be car related in a car discussion thread. Size limits will also be changed, so watch for these changes and the corresponding rules / terms of use updates! :)

maybe put a restriction on new users regarding attachments?, just like how theyre not allowed to post in the marketplace, also remove image upload priviledges...it'll cut down some of the bandwith use....a beyond fundraiser also sounds good...

Ok so I've got too much time on my hands but ive figured this out.

We got over 25,000 users on here, not all of which post all the time and come here, but this place grows by the day now as you can tell by the bandwidth limits coming into effect. Here is my calculations.

26870 users
lets say
10000 of which post.

If that 26870 paid $2 for a year, thats over 50grand

If 10000 paid $2 thats 20000

for an 800gb a month, 1U Co-Location server it is roughly $300 a month US. so $3600 a year US, lets say $5 a year. For the basic server.

Now you add in Hardware upgrades, the cost of a line if doing locally, the cost of the initial hardware, excess bandwidth charges OR growing bandwidth for a raidly growing website.

I think most of us can just not buying a pop or a coffee one day and giving it to beyond to help support the site, and I'm sure there would be more then a few of us who would be willing to do it more then once a year.

If you ask me, I say cut back some of the features like attachments and such, and give the people who donate, more relaxed/un-limited restrictions (not as in, infinity, as in, not limited, same as now). Give them a special tag or symbol beside their name to make them feel special or something and give us the please of having the same old beyond we love to browse though.

Ok I think I'm done, what you people think?

Well that would be a good think I would say. Less people/Less traffic. Less bandwidth used and everything. People who just signup for free just to sell stuff will actually pay if they still want to sell. I mean its all worth. Few bucks won't matter too much, for a website like beyond.ca. Donations or payed, either way. I would be in.

Thats why you do the normal user/paid user method.

Cut the attachment sizes down and mailboxes for unpaid users.

When a user donates money, you get the normal attachment sizes and a larger mailbox possibly.

We wouldn't loose the people who are dedicated to the website as they would know that running something this large isn't a freebie and uses alot of time and money to keep alive.

If the people who support the site donate $2 every now and then, this site wouldn't have an issue with costs most likely, thats why i say we use the donation method with a little tag or symbol to make everyone feel special to the public aswell.

i'm absolutely all for a normal/premium member option if that were to arise. i'd gladly donate like 10 bucks or whatever to the site that i spend some 90% of my internet time on. another thought, im guessing every member on beyond takes up a little space right? why not ask for volunteers from the forum to each take a few pages of the members list with really low post totals(i.e. 0 posts since 2003, last post in 2003 etc.) and go through them, sending pm's to these member and wait for a response. if no response is recieved in a month or so, then delete the member from the database. same with banned members, delete their usernames and lower the number of inactive, space eating accounts on beyond. just something i always figured could help but never bothered to mention til now :D

Introducing the "Rage2 Rubber Fund".

Now, this is not quite what you're thinking.

It'd be contributions directly to Rage2 for the purchase of fresh rubber for all the beyond sponsored drifting he's gonna do at Race City this year. How about that? I got a few bucks to see that. Yeah, baby!

I've got no problem giving some cash away. I spend 80% of my time on here and It's great resource for selling car related items. Sometimes it's nice to go through the archives and read threads that make me laugh.

Some of the other boards I frequent have a two-tiered system where the people who are willing to pay a small amount ($10-20 a year) have a bigger in-box, more options and get a neat little member title. It would also deter some of the trolls from signign up just to spam and would help clear out some of the more inactive accounts.

Whats the SLK worth? 100K? 20,000 x 5 = Not to far away!

i'm beginning to spend more and more time on here, even though 780tuners is my 'local' site.

i don't see why beyond should be responsible for hosting attachements, there's tons of free places like photobucket.com, imageshack, etc.

maybe enforce a max dimension/file size on them?

and i'd be up for donating once in a while, though as of yet i've no use for any features offered above and beyond what's avaliable now. unless you cut back features on free accounts.

If 20 people donate or if 100 people donate or if 500 people donate, it doesn't matter, we are still doing our best to help out a site we all enjoy and spend our time on.

If you want to be an ignorant basterd and think that no one will pay because of some odd reason then go ahead and do that, but unless you are posting to help out beyond and help keep this place working for all who enjoy it then don't post, you are wasting bandwidth by typing your useless crap.

$10 a year I think most people wouldn't mind paying, less then a buck a month, I don't think thats an issue. I wouldn't mind paying $2 a month or even more for it, frankly for people like us who spend this much time on it and could use the same features we have now, not paying for a drink one day isn't going to make me die.

I think Premium Membership is a great idea. Ferrarichat's Rosso Membership is 50 bucks... and people pay for it. Most are Silver Subscribed (15 bucks a year) but they still love it. Their names are in bold and they have a special title as well. However, on Fchat you don't get avatars or sigs unless you're a paying member. You may think it sounds stupid but it's really not a big deal not having a sig or avatar, you get used to it.

If I could find a way to pay, I would.:D

I'll buy the Beyond DVD if it ever comes out:rofl:

and speaking of car washes, our school did one for the tsunami and raised 42 thousand bucks.

and wtf do we need attachments for? Imageshack has a code that you can insert that allows you to host pics on Imageshack from a post (it's in a little box right between Submit and the post box)

I tried to attach a picture in the buy/sell forums of some parts I have for sale. First try I got the message that my pic was too big so I shrunk it. It was well under the 100000 bytes (or whatever it was), and I couldn't post the pic. I wouldn't get the message saying it was too large, it would just time out and I tried it a few times and it was still a no-go.
