i am going to pick up a nissan pathfinder (1999/2000 edition) in the near future and i was wondering what people had to say about them. for a mid size suv, i hear that the gas mileage is "better" than others. im going to go with the smaller engine as well to save gas. any opinions would help out alot! thanks

I've got a 2000 QX4 which is the same as pathfinder, decent car, good quality needs very little repairs but underpowered. It's a mall SUV, don't go offroading in it. Gas mileage seems to be a bit better than my bro's 4 runner and my dad's Trailblazer but that's probably because it's underpowered.

yea, it's quite underpowered, better off finding a 2001-2003 pathfinder.

You don't have a choice of engines within years. Up to 01, the engine used was 3.3 liter. 01 and up have a much more powerful 3.5 liter engine. Both get the same mileage.

If it's an auto, check to see if the transmission has had a fluid change.

i have a 98. i liek it very much. reliable, amazing 4x4 system (never had any troubles in snow/ice or otherwise), nice features (power windows, etc.), and u can get them for cheaper than a 4runner or anything similar (given that its not domestic). as stated, it is underpowered, thats why try and find a standard one;)

Not directly relevent perhaps, but I have a 1988 with 350,000 km on it. Its ugly, but starts all the time, even when I don't use it for weeks at a stretch. Its still on the original clutch too. Power is not its long suit, but it gets reasonable fuel economy from its 150hp 3.0L V6. It gets better fuel economy overall than a friend's 87 4Runner with a 2.4L 4 cyl...that 4 had to work pretty hard.

I offroad it lightly - its no mud bogger, but it goes places if you treat it gently and with some respect.

i dont own one, but i worked for Budget car-rentals for a year and I've driven them quite a few times. decent truck, good on gas and nice and clean on the interior. kinda gutless tho IMO, but overall its 'okay'

too late..:D

pathys > all.
Super crazy reliable and mileage is pretty good, as said previously the 99.5+'s that you will be looking at will have a 3.3L engine.

I'd say most definately go for it, love em!!!

eats a lot of gas, and very under powered. 2001+ pathfinder with 3.5l have better fuel milage (says nissan) and more power....you cant go wrong.

I have a 2001 Pathfinder, it has decent power and I can get about 400-450 km out of 3/4 tank (I've never bothered to figure out the mileage).

My mom owns a 96 Pathfinder LE fully loaded, power everything and leather. Pretty awesome, mileage is decent, not the best. Awesome vehicles to drive though, lots of fun!

Im looking for 01'+ pathfinders, have been for a while, but im finding it hard to decide whether or not I want to spend the extra to get the SE, XE's are cheap but I kinda like having all the power options and the two tone body.
What are your guys opinions on this?
I love the fact that its got power, 4WD, size, storage and style.

Pathfinders are great SUV's for the price. they are on average $5000 cheaper than the 4runner when you compare them side by side. they do come stock with a little less HP than the 4runner though. i got a 99 pathfinder with alot of mods and its great. i don't have a problem with power at all. towing is not a problem .

I had a 95 the last of the real off-roaders. Yeah the engine was never the most potent but the torque was good, and it could handle serious cargo (supension was alot stiffer than my 2000

The Pathfinder/Patrol is one of the best selling SUV's in the world for a reason. The engine is bullet proof. The sacrifice for power is reliability. Change the fluids and routine maintenance and 300k is easy. Electrical gremlins were a pain but the engine was great. I abused my 95 (so to speak) and it still flew through emissions.

The 2000+ is a good vehicle but a different one. Kinda cushy, and heavy. No complaints though. It's just not the tough body on frame mini-brute it used to be.

Pathy is a great way to go. I have one (89..) but it truly keeps going..and going..and going..

Have had it for a lonngg time..and have had to do zero maintenance..just alot of tire repairs from driving to the construction site lots :|

Very reliable car, will start in any situation. These years were great for off roading as well :D

The one you are looking at ( and now purchased:bigpimp:) at awesome rides..true to the fact they lack a tiny bit of power.

Nissan all the way :bigpimp:

I heard that only premium 91+ octane fuel should be used on the 01-04 Pathfinders with the 3.5L engine. True or not? I've been trying to weigh all the pros and cons between the 99-02 4Runner and 01-04 Pathfinders. I plan to pick up one of these in the near future. I'd prefer to buy new but unfortunately the latest gen Toyota, Nissan SUVs look like crap.

^^as far as i know, you only need 91+ with the supercharged versions of the 3.5.....please correct me if i am wrong!!!! the 4runner is larger and more powerful but i find the pathfinder to be a little more luxury oriented so i t all depends on what youre looking for.
