I'm an 18 year old male in Alberta. I know that i'm the prime candidate for an accident in the insurance companies eyes. Now I've read that I could be paying 9-10k dollars a year on even a car that only costs 1500 bucks. Now I know nothing about car insurance but a quick look on google provided me an article that showed people paying that price for insurance.

I talked to my friend and asked him how much it would cost him to drive his car. He is 20 years old and said that under his parent plan it would cost 35 bucks a month. Is this possible?

I've never had any sort of tickets or anything.

My understanding from what I went through, Living in ontario we have no-fault which means insurance companies screw both sides in accidents. But most of this applies

1) different companies have different criteria, some care more about urban versus rural than tickets

2) With no history you're screwed. When I was 16 it was 3000 grand a year to insure a Ford escort, that was the late eighties

3) As a second driver your rate drops. Well not quite. The extra 'risk' you incure is absorbed by the primary driver. But since the car can only have one driver at a time

4) mileage matters. I claim my Pathfinder as less than 16000km/yr and my rate was 90 a month

5) The system isn't fare, I've been clocked numerous times in excess....one ticket could have been 74 klicks over in my pathfinder. Wasn't paying attention to the speed the generous cop dropped it to 49 over. I think suspending my permit wasn't worth the hassle of towing...yada yada yada. Even then my insurance is cheaper because I have 16 years accident free, versus your two years.

And I've proven to be a higher risk.

6) Theft. The insurance on a used bentley turbo is cheaper than my Pathfinder. Since bentleys don't get stolen very often it's less of a risk. And a honda civic is higher than both.

7) stupid things like the color and number of doors. Some companies take a red car seriously or one with 2 doors against a 4 door.

8) Your parents record, again the system sucks. This may only apply as second driver but all it takes is for them to have one stolen vehicle and you are a risk.

9) The vehicles history, deaths, collisions, history of being souped up. Again a Bentley is cheaper to run than a honda, except for gas

10) Where you live. Living in the city is a risk

You want cheap insurance here's your vehicle

An 1954 Buick Roadmaster, 4 doors, with electric pink exterior. Can't imagine one of those has ever been stolen or involved in an accident.

I had a 2 and 4 door car and I payed the same for both. My insurance never asked me for my car color :dunno:

did you do the insurance classes? I went to 10 hrs driving and 15 hrs in school and got 44% off my insurance , I pay less then 100 every month but under my parents name...I am same age as you. But I heard that going under ur own name after the insurance class well be around same price as under ur parents.

He's in Ontario. The system is very different out there. It's one of the reasons I didn't go out there for school- couldn't afford to maintain, fuel and insure my car.

Wrong. Some insurance companies wont even insure you without Drivers Ed.

The reason your rate is so low is because you are under your parents name. Get a quote from an insurance broker on your own insurance that has comparable coverage and you'll be amazed.

I'm 18, and I've been driving since the day of my 16th birthday.

I've noticed that if your broker likes you, you tend to get a better rate.

For example, I brought my broker a chocolate bar and next thing I knew my rate was 22% lower! Seriously, that's a true story. Maybe it was a coincidense, but now she gets a little card on her birthday too :)

Back when I was 16, I was paying $3000 a year for insurance without full coverage on an Eagle Talon.. But once I turned 20 it decreased a lot, even with all my tickets and demerits.

Insurance did drop HUGELY this year. However, my experiences have told me that insurance on a new driver is still going to be the MAX rate, and they will try and nail you on everything.

Be careful :)

Whoa, insurance went down¿ I thought it was goin up... gotta go reshop my rates then. I paid around 100 under parents 16-20, got no moving violations or demerits, went on my own at 21, stayed ticket-free and have paid $79 for PLPD plus theft/fire/vandalism for a while now.

should be able to get that down to 50 if u're sayin its cheaper now

or u could create your own insurance company with yr printer¡¿¡!¡
