what are they and how do they work? ive noticed that they seem to be some sort of hardcore and rare suspension setup...

They work the same as a conventional strut, except the direction of shaft motion is reversed, with the bump stop at the opposite end of the strut from where it normally is.

Inverted struts provide better lateral rigidity. Less flex and side to side motion results in a more consistent toe and camber curve than a conventional macpherson strut.
