More power + AWD, other than the maintenance cost, A4 should be the better one of the 2.

The 2.8 A4 Is a better choice IMO, and base model compared with a mid range is always going to be one sided. The maintenence should be the same for both
For Calgary weather, the Quatttro will always be better the RWD

BMW for its status, resale value, styling, comfort, and added reliability over the older Audi.

I dont think the two year difference will make much difference with reliability.
For me, I would rather not be driving a base model...the 2.9 should be quicker, it is a 190 hp V6...IIRC the 323 is a 4cyl..:thumbsdow

^ 323 is a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder pushing out 170 hp and 181 ft/lbs.

EDIT: t-im beat me to it.

so for power they are pretty close, im leaning to the A4 because its not as common, but i have always liked the 323:confused:

personally i would also go for the A4. getting around in winter with the 323i would be pretty good with winter tires, but AWD makes things much simpler. from my knowledge tho, the 323i would be a tad more reliable...i guess it depends on mileage of each.

Audi A4:

1/4 mile - 15.9 seconds

0-60 time - 7.4 seconds

BMW 323i:

1/4 mile - 15.7

0-60 time - 7.2 seconds

There is a huge difference between E36 and E46 winter driving capabilities. I own both models and drive both through the winter, just with a proper set of winter tires and sandbags in the E36

lI don't say its not double - I did drive mine E36 for 3 winters with few close calls. I had a chance to drive a S4 a few times this winter in fresh snow - man that thing hauled ass in deep snow like me bimmer on tarmac.
I love bimmers (owned few in the past) but I'm seriously thinking of S4 or A6 I would not have need for keeping a fwd for my wife.

Really safe winter vehicle
