Has anyone had exp. w/ this build yet? I'm starting to build a few new systems and i thought i'd recommend to them the 64bit ones w/ 2mb cache, but i wanted to try installing x64 on them to see if i could feel the difference. I read something about drivers being not 100% stable, so prove me wrong=)

XP 64-bit is basically 2003 with an XP feel, with enough updates and extras (newer kernel than XP SP2) to call it an upgrade from SP2, rather than an alternative.

The difference will be most felt when working with programs that are CPU intensive, like 3D rendering or drafting applications if they were programmed to utilize 64-bit instructions of course :).

I'm still using SP2 on my laptop (amd 64 3000+) because not one peripheral had 64-bit drivers when XP x64 launched... I went ahead and installed x64 anyway to check it out and, despite my crippled install, it felt very solid, more-so than SP2 for sure.

SP2 is obsolete, along with 32-bit processing in general. It's just going to take a bit of time before it's more obvious.

with xp 64bit, you HAVE to have 64bit drivers for everything. You cannot use 32bit drivers for a few things at all, it wont work one bit.

so i guess we should all hold out a bit, or use it on a secondary station~ oh wellz

Unless your using it for intensive purposes and have the cash to spend on higher end hardware and software, it wont be worth it for while.

Heh, even Windows Update is still 32-bit. xD

WinXP64 is a lame duck until all the drivers are final (90% of the ones I've checked are still beta) and there is a 64bit application base. An Athlon64 will run all those juicy 32bit apps well, but the OS is going to take some time to really show its power. Microsoft released it now to get developers developing their apps for 64bit.

Bottom line: Wait for Longhorn to come out.
