Its not free at Saigon. And thats what I was comparing it to. Taste wise, they are pretty much identical.

I have yet to try the seedier pho places. From what I hear, the dirtier the place the better the food... :dunno:

I'm spoiled by SoCal Pho/food so when I'm there my favourite place is Pho 79 in Westminster.

As for Pho in Calgary its just not the same so I settle for Pho Dau Bo. But I used to like the Pho place East of Pho Binh Minh, but that place closed down. I was so sad when it closed, I forget the name though.

Oriental Phonix is pretty decent when I've been there, but there are alot of better places IMO. Some of the places some of the guys mentioned here must be pretty good. Going to definately have to give some of them a try soon. There was also a place I used to go to quite a bit 3 or so years ago. It was in a little strip mall behind where the old Grand Isle used to be. I forget the name of the place but their Pho was my very favorite. Maybe someone else here knows the place I am talking about. I haven't been there in a long time, but I'm sure its still there.

Yep - That's Viet Village. I love that place - the Pho is good, perhaps not outstanding, but consistently good and with good service. What cracks me up though is that they retained all the old Italian restaurant decorations and murals. They painted a few Vietnamese scenes over top of the Murals of the Sicilian landscape too. Its quite funny.

I second that. I go to the one in Chinatown, and they have a sign "Best Pho in Calgary" or something like that, so it better be good to have a sign like that! And the ghetto "patio" in the mall just adds to the experience.

The best spring rolls are that place on Centre St by the Mazda next to the Greek place... can never remember the name (cuz I'm not Viet). They're the double-fried stuff like back home in Richmond at Pho Lan...mmmmmmmm.

I'm always lookin for better tho! What cracks me up is all the caucasians I work with who say Saigon Y2K is the nuts...hahahha... they have no idea.

I gotta know, as a dumb white guy, what's wrong with Oriental Pheonix? It's pretty much my favorite place to eat, yet everyone here bashes it. I've tried a few others, including Bagolac(close except for the Noc cham) Pho Hoi in southland crossing, Vietnamese Village and none are as good. Is it just price? I don't mind paying a little extra for good food.

Please, fill me in!

oriental phoenix was once upon a time a good vietnamese restaurant (when they were one location in little saigon mall). The food was good at a reasonable price.

Now the portions are small, the price is higher and it seems like you're paying more for atmosphere then good food (which isn't very good anymore).

I find the food is now very bland w/o much flavor. Instead of the guys wife cooking, they probably have someone who has never been to Vietnam cooking vietnamese food :thumbsdow
