Don't know if this has already been posted..
I was at the Calgary Sports Car club meeting, and a member drove in with a silver Evo VIII . He got it from Winnipeg.Apparently a few were snuck across the border as "Lancers" ..:)

Sorry ,no pics, but I had a good look at the car , and it's pretty sweet. I'll a get some pics next time I see it.

Apparently 10 Evos were imported to Canada by Mitsu before Department of Transportation realized that Lancer and Lancer Evolution are two different cars that don't share anything, not just different variation of the same car.
That's when No on importing Evos was imposed.

Yep that's the one from the Trader, was purchased in Winnipeg for $36K

Will post pictures later today

One would think that the DOT would employ automotive savy people to prevent stuff like this.

I got to inspect a Lancer EVOVIII MR in Salt Lake City and they look sweet in person. I'd own one today if they were legally available.:(

Those evo's are so nice sigh wish they wern't illegal here. You'd think that people who work for DOT could tell a difference between a regular lancer and evo as benyl said. Thats really sad for the DOT that their employees don't know much about vehicles and differences between them.

To bad someone have figure it out, otherwise we would have Evos.

Maybe someday Mitsu will go thru all the trouble to get it DOT certified

I've heard this before but I find it a little hard to believe. If Transport Canada changes their mind they don't just go "oh well" - they would also impound the cars that did come across or at least try to. Just ask the guy with the Longhorn limo.

But anyways it would be nice to see one again.

I have told EVERYBODY that, but nobody believes me. *anyone* could've imported a Lancer when they first came out into Canada. People were doing it in Vancouver and Toronto.

There are loopholes around everything.

This is 97 Ford Escort Cosworth - 2.0 Turbo AWD registered and insured in Alberta. 100% legally imported to Canada and is not under 15 year old rule since its a 97 (imported in winter 2003/2004)

Ok, but why is that particular example legal? Probably because it's a rally car for "off road/competition" use only. It's not like we haven't seen EVO IV's and V's around before too for the same reason. :dunno:

PrezeS_PL

If it was off road/competition only it would not be street legal and registered.

One day when I gather all the info I will let you all know. From what I know you could bring Evo from states but the cost would be like 10k.

This Cosworth has a little history to it, being an ex Ford works Cosworth used by Colin McRae and Nicky Grist
Colin's and Nicky's names are embroidered on the seats and Colin's signature is featured on the hood of the car.

Just a clarification on some old posts...

Rally teams bring cars over for competition but must be registered on the road. They are imported as temporary imports, and generally, aren't allowed here for more than a year. In some cases they can stay for up to 3 years if the team is Canada based and only competes in Canada. During this time, it can not be resold.

So that escort cosworth is here differently. Also, it's not the DOT. It's trasport Canada, and some of the TC guys aren't too bright, so things do sneak by here occassionally.

And yes, TC can revoke importation, like the Longhorn Limo ONLY if you lied during importation, so it's a risk getting these cars over if you lie and not use a loophole. The longhorn limo was a weird one, it was a CDN truck sent to the states as conversion and brought home. TC felt that because it was rebuilt, it's not the original vehicle anymore, and thus, the owner effectively "lied" when bringing the vehicle back, thus impounded and went thru courts, the dude not eating, etc.

In the EVO's case, it was completely legal here in the system, and only changed later, so they can't be revoked.

So what is the legality of modifying an existing car to EVO standards? When I was considering a Ralliart and researching the lancers I read about one guy who had an Evo6 engine swapped with the 2.4L ralliart one. He had left it as a FWD but the company that did the swap was willing to swap the drive train as well. What would be left to differeniate between the two other than a VIN number?

I find it interesting that on AMA's auto insurance quote web site I can get quotes for both 2005 and 2006 Evos. They are quite reasonable too. Where as I couldn't get one for a cobalt ss. Does this mean that the AMA will look the other way if you manage to sneak it past customs? I know there were those few Evos that are legal here in canada but none were a 2006.

The Longhorn wan't impounded because it wan't the original car. The owner wanted it brought here as a limousine but the TC said that it was a bus. It was subsequently impounded, then out on the streets, then impounded again... it just keeps going.
