Hi guys,

I hope somebody could help me. I bought my 1989 320i BMW from Japan and sure enough, Owners Manual is in Japanese too :)
I was able to find lots of technical info online and even some repair manuals in english. But there are still some things unclear.

On the dashboard of my car recently appeared red signal and word "INSPECTION" with a clock symbol. I know that it is a reminder that car maintenace should be done, but the question is whether that light would disappear only if the car is serviced in the BMW dealer (or authorised shop) or it will go away automatically after some time (even if I don't do anything?

How the car would "know" that the inspection is done if I perform the inspection myself?

I know, my questions sound funny, but I would really appreciate your advice.

The light has to be reset. The dealer uses a tool to do it, as do most independant shops. You can reset the light yourself as well by shorting two pins on the diagnostic connector(which is exactly what the tool does.)

I don't remember which pins but there are a number of websites that will tell you how to do it, ie http://www.unofficialbmw.com/
