Hi,
this summer i'm looking into upgrading my audio system. I'm on a budget, and my goal is two upgrade the deck, front components (i already have stock components) and rear fills.

I want to concentrate on front components and the rear fill i dont' quite care for so i will spend less for the rear.

anyhow, i kinda figure that i wont have money for an amp to power my components.

So my question is what kind of disadvantage should i be expecting powering the components directly off the deck w/o an amp?
how many beyond members are doing this?

thank you.

u should at least get a small amp to power the speakers if u want the most outta them

Would you be able to provide me some examples of small amp?
I can't afford to lose any trunk space... thats why mounting and amp is a no-no for me...

I would just spend a little bit of money on a small amp...just a little 2 channel amp that'll put out like 40 or 50 RMS x 2. I'm sure you could find an amplifier like this for around 100 bucks. Keep your eye open on beyond or maybe take a look at A&B Sound or FutureShop or places like that. It's definitely worth your time to get a small amp for components.

Mount it under your passenger or drivers seat. It won't be in your way and you'll still have trunk space.

What kind of vehicle do you have, and approx what is your budget?

Amping your components would be a very good idea, as they will definately sound more clear, especially at higher volumes.

i'm looking at about 300ish for deck, 250~ for comps, and cheap for rears...

components don't work well off of HU's because the passive crossover network can eat as much as half the power and when you only have 15 watts to start with, you need it all

running my components off my head unit still sounds way, way better then running coaxials off my head unit, but switching to an external amp made a whole othe world of difference too.

really? every setup i've heard like that they just don't get loud enough without distorting unless the bass is turned way down

mine it is actually pretty good.. I was really surprised actually, the bass response is great. I was thinking they would distort but they get pretty loud, loud enough I can't hear myself talk at a regular volume (or hear any noise from outside the car). and this is with no HPF on it, the deck doesn't have one. I have treble +8, mid -1 and bass +3 and it sounds great to volume 27/35 on most songs, there are couple that are heavy on midbass that it doesn't handle so well and I have to turn those down to 25.

Because even a small amp (ie 40wattsRMSx4) is far better tthan a head unit's power.

head units are only like 15x4 watts of power and distort very easily. a 40x4 is a perfect speaker amp, Phoenix Gold makes one in the Octane series I believe, and I love PG amps.

ebay is your friend. you can find a cheap ass amp for 50 bucks and that will hold you over till you can afford a real amp. If you ever want to setup your components, I have some brand new CDT EuroSports, they are brand new and still in the packaging!
