How much restoration does it require?

Big thing to keep in mind is that as with any restoration, the money you get out of it will never come back to you. You could buy a rough running example, say, for $5000. Throw in an OK paint job and a bit of body work for $4000, maybe $1000 for a new clutch, another $1-2000 for brakes, seals and bearings - things that erode with disuse. An engine overhaul will be pricy; Porsche parts cost, and there is little aftermarket for the 928 as there is for the 911 and 944.

At the end of the day, a great running example will be a neat and uncommon car - probably a nice car to drive and one of the few true Grand Touring cars made in the 70's and 80's besides Aston Martins and XJS's. Unfortunately - you could get into the car for $15000 to 20000 without breaking a sweat and yet it will likely never be worth more than maybe $12000 ish.

I am guessing at all of the figures here, of course. Nevertheless, I think that the best way to approach it is this; The restoration of a car should be approached with passion. If this is a car you want to enjoy for years and have always dreamed of having, then maybe it will be worth it all.

If you come at it with the idea that you will fix it up and get your money's worth out it......Maybe look at one that only needs ongoing maintenance to keep running.

Well actually the vehicle (body shape) is very good, just has been sitting around for a while just wonder what maintenance steps I should go through first, engine wise.

hmmm overhaul seems quite lengthy process and lots $$

edit

come to think of it I don't think it needs an overhaul
