Can anyone help?

My son-in-law bought a Golf from a VW dealer in France for export to England. He was sold a warranty but it didn't work when the engine had to be replaced. Nevertheless VW UK paid 70% of ther cost of the new engine but nothing for the labour. My son-in-law was thus over £1500 out of pocket. All the French dealer would do was to offer him the money back that he paid for the warantee!

Can anyone offer my son-in-law advice what to do? He can be reached by e-mail ([email protected]) or mobile phone 07768504769 and will gladly send a document with full details.

Many thanks and best wishes.

Try talking to VW customer service, if the car is under warranty they may pay for the labor.

Thank you for your quick reply. We did contact VW Customer Service in the UK and the result was that they paid 70% of the cost of the new engine despite confirmingthat the warranty sold by the French VW dealer was not valid outside France. We contacted VW France as it seemed that the French dealer had knowingly sold a dud warranty but they said the matter was between the buyer and the dealer.

Best wishes. Anthony Vandyk

knowing only what u told us, i would suggest simply accepting the french dealerships offer of refunding the money spent on the warranty. however i do have a question, did u inform the salesperson that the vw was being moved to the uk when u bought it?

Thank you. Yes, the salesman knew the car was to be exported. We chose the dealer because it specialised in exports to England.Best wishes. Anthony Vandyk

Personally, I would take the refund on the cost of the warranty and then take the dealer to court for misrepresentation. Knowingly selling you a warranty that would not be valid in the vehicles destination country is just plain bad business. One could also draw the parallel of unloading a car with an already bad motor on a customer you knew was going to be exporting it expressly to get it off the lot and not have to cover a warranty claim on it.

Exactly what I was thinking, check over the papers your son-in-law signed. Read over the warranty to see what is actually covered, you might be able to take them to court. Although i'm not too sure how the court systems work in Europe, it may be harder since the both of you are in different countries. Since the paper were signed in France, those laws may apply.
