View Full Version : Fairlady Z or Skyline?

My buddy is looking at importing a car from Japan and he has narrowed it down to the 300ZX Fairlady or a Skyline.

Both vehicles will be a turbo...Fairlady will prolly be the 2+2 Twin. Just wanting everybody's opinions as to which vehicle he should get.

My vote was for the Fairlady because from the research that I've done it should be a bit quicker (even if the skyline is the GTS-M) and parts should be easier to come by here in Canada. I heard the turbos tend to have problems with them but I'm not sure. Anybody experience any?

If anybody wants to put in their two cents or throw out some specs and information that would be greatly appreciated.

I'd pick the GTS-t M over the Z.

GTS-t M:
-Better visibility
-Lighter
-Easier to work on

The only major con that come to mind is parts availability, the Z wins that.

Fairlady gets my vote - i like the styling better and parts availabilty is very important because neither of those cars are terribly reliable.

Turbos btw are a wear item - any car with a turbo will need it rebuilt every so often.

Z for sure. Love the type m tho but it really come down to what tyour friend wants. Ive got 2 buddies interested in those cars. One is getting a type m and 1 a 300ZX (non import). Hopefulyl i will get to drive both. But yeah get a low mileage car of any one of thsoe and you wont be disappointed.

Go Skyline for sure:thumbsup: My opinion isthe Z32 isnt the greatest platform for a car, the engine could have been alot better. Plus the skyline looks increadable, the fairlady Z is cramped. On a personal note tho, i'd base it on available cash, if u can afford a second car and the money for parts, Skyline for sure, the Z32, chances are u can get parts in a week where the R32 will take weeks or even months. They both r sweet car, but u need to base it on whats more practical for yourself, i think it would be a bad idea to drive either one in winter.

Finding parts for the Z will be much easier and you'll have more variety.

...Arent Fairladys really expensive to mantain regardless of if they have domestica parts available? They are a hell of a nice car tho.

The Skyline is going to be a more rare car. The 300ZX TT will be faster. You decide.

I'd say get the jdm fairlady.. the skylines are gonna be beat to crap in the next few years.. everybody and their grandma will have one. the fairlady in calgary anyway, isnt as common as the older skylines right now.

I don't think the Skylines will get too overblown. I think that the JDM thing will be a pretty uncommon event.

Z, hands down, skylines are only really popular among kids now because of Fast and the Furious, the Z is jsut so clean and smooth, get that and turbo the shit out of it.

I personally like the style of the Z much better but after reading threads here on beyond and also some google searching, it sounds like the Fairlady's a pretty expensive to maintain. The engine bay is cramped and difficult to work in. Can anybody speak from experience that owns a 300 or a Fairlady locally? Is it possible to do anywork without pretty much taking the engine out?

It is pretty expensive when you have to work on the engine however, the design and parts for it are actually very well done so at some point when things do start going, you can replace them all at once get it over with and never have to worry for a while again.. for example I spend prolly 5K fixing up mine 2 yrs ago.. haven't had to fix anything except change oil for 2 yrs so far... also it is rwd so u don't have to worry about cv joints and typical fwd vehicle problems.. My greatest concern is never the price... it's finding someone who knows enough about Z's not to mess stuff up...

how could you say that.. civics cant compare to a skyline. I have owned both, and a skyline beats the shit out of any civic!

It was just a sarcastic remark about how skylines are getting more and more common around here. Take it easy.

Fairlady Z all the way! Twin turbo, T-tops, gorgeous cars. Sure, the engine is rather time-consuming to fix, but I'd much rather spend more time working on a more powerful VG engine than spend time waiting for my Skyline parts to fly in.
