Okay it's 6:49 am so nobody tell me to just call the dealership on this one.

Just curious to see if anyone knows how long the timing belts on Volkswagen Jetta's should last:confused:

You want to change every 100K to be safe. 120-150K if you want to push it.

But if that snaps, it's a total engine rebuilt.

Yikes I'm at 104,000 right now. I'll get it in quick then.

Dont quote me on this but i thought that VW's were non interferance engines (the 4cyl's anyways) so if your belt snaps its just a pain in the ass and a tow bill.

Okay I just called two different shops. The first was a German Car Specialist up in the northwest and they told me it should be replaced every 96,000kms.

Secondly I called Northland Volkswagen and they told me it should be replaced every 138,000 kms.

So I'm thinking I probably have a little breathing room, the German Car Specialist gave me a better price but I also need to replace the water pump while they're in there.

Comments anyone?

Its good to have it done in the reccomended time, its not like it has to be done at an exact number though, but ya, don't leave it too long.

pm me, i can hook you up with a former vw mechanic friend of mine who does work on the side. price will likely be half of what youve been quoted.

Get a new thermostat while the coolant is drained out when they're doing the water pump. More cheap insurance.

I thought VWs used timing chains? Or is this just older ones? Or am I just stupid?
