Jetta: Apparently 800km's per tank. I have heard this, but I doubt it is that high. It probably gets better mileage than the Subaru

2.5 RS: AWD, good for winter

Jetta: Seems like there is more aftermarket parts for Jetta

Jetta: Would be cheaper to fix than an AWD system that broke down as found in the 2.5 RS

Jetta: More reliable from what I hear

The Subaru AWD rarely breaks down, so that's not really an issue.

I'd get the Subaru 2.5 RS but the GC8 body style (2001 was the last year I think)
As for fuel milage, I know my friends 2000 Impreza 2.5 RS gets really good fuel economy. I think he was saying something like 700 km on a tank.

Check out more info on the Impreza at NASIOC (http://www.nasioc.com)

haa theres no way a jetta is more reliable than a scooby. the jetta is definitely more luxurious and comfortable, whereas the the scooby is more practical and utilitarian.

not to bash on VW's but my mom's friend's bought a brand new Jetta last year. One day out of the blue it wouldn't start. They took it in to the dealership and what was found to be the problem was that it was missing the seal in between the engine and the tranny!

This of course doesn't happen with every Jetta, point of fact is that it was just a freak thing that happened.

I'd get the JETTA GLS...

Subaru - Fun factor is 1000% more. Good build quality, and more practical.

subie, reasons already posted.

I also think the 2.5RS may be safer due to the front crumple zone being more effective with the boxer engine, but the jetta may be able to handle side impact better, I know they offer side and curtain airbags. Hard to say, both very safe cars.

yea jetta's are a little girly, but still pretty nice.

Just have to ask yourself, are you a leather seat kinda guy or not?

If I were you, I'd get a TS Wagon. Its the same 2.5 L engine as the sedan. Its a lot cheaper (I think msrp is around 21k whereas sedan is around 28k???)...you don't get the rims/suspension. Interior is the same I believe.

With that money you save you can make the wagon look a lot nicer, or just keep the money if you don't care to mod the wagon.

get the subie...its very reliable, i dont know if i could relate this to the 2.5rs, but i have a 96' outback 230,000k's on it, still running smooth, a little fix up here and there, but nothing much that'll cost you big bucks. hasn't broke down once yet.

after driving both, you'd be insane to buy the Volks. Not that it's a bad car, but a Subie is fantastic all the time -snow, ice, gravel, it doesn't matter.
