Got my tax bill this week and it's up 2.93% over last year. How about you?

Roughly how much do property taxes cost? On say a $150,000 place? $200,000?

According to the City of Calgary website, it's 0.78% of the assessed value.

$150k => $1,170

$200k => $1,560

Yeah, I just calculated mine and it's 0.8%. I checked the City site again and it shown 0.78% for all neighborhoods. :dunno:

You can get it deducted monthly from your bank account or pay the lump sum by June 30.

It's not really a surprise, if you own a home, you must take this into consideration besides the monthly mortgage.

And just like insurance, you can pay monthly.

Yeah, I just got my bill for this year and it is 0.8% as well but when I got my assessment earlier in the year, it had the taxes paid for 2004 based on 0.78% which they called actual but where it had the taxes for 2005, it was based on a 0.8% which they referred to as estimate.

But my assessment went up by $35,000 so I'm paying more no matter what.

^ I think the hardest hit area are communities close to the core where their assessment goes up by a lot.

Im glad I live outside of the city limits for once. I cant belive you guys have to pay property tax depending on the value of your house. Out in springbank there is one flat tax that doesnt vary for ppl with huge/small houses.

Same idea of income tax. The more you can afford, the more you pay. Springbank are usually filled with wealthy people and there ain't much community facilities and it's a small community. So one small price can cover all expenses. If we do the one price structure in Calgary, many poor families proper can't afford it.

And housing isn't that affordable as it is anyway.

I actually live in the outer NW but my house is within the radius of two approved schools so assessed and market values have gone up quite a bit in our area. Lately houses have been selling fast and for more than I would expect.

I don't understand how this works...

My TIPP payment is 150 a month, yet my property tax is 1080 for the year. This makes no sense to me!

If you started your TIPP program late, then maybe they adjusted it to equal $1080 by the time June 30 arrives. :dunno:

Next tax year, you should be at $1080/12 = $90 per month.
